Gaze and gesture often show these relationships. With children it is often a child’s direct gaze, which gives us a point of entry and invites us into the painting. Wedding or Betrothal Portraits Formal Portraits show the figures like actors in a play and they exhibit various poses and gestures designed to tell us something about them. Partly through the setting, dress and poses of the sitters that suggest royalty, wealth or power in a portrait Informal: These poses appear more natural and in a natural or common setting. + There are many different kinds of question we can ask when we look at a portrait. The pose and expression that someone adopts in a portrait is very revealing and important. It can hint at someone's character and aspirations and even dictate how we feel about them; do they appear intimidating, friendly or nervous by the pose or expression they adopt?
