Envirothon 2015 Free Geospatial Technologies for Environmental Applications. William Hansen Worcester State University

Geospatial Technologies Remote Sensing – Images of the earth taken from satellites or planes. Global Positioning System receivers – Devices to accurately locate features using signals from a constellation of satellites Geographic Information Systems – Computer Programs to store, analyze and create spatial data.

MassGIS –

MassGIS Online Viewers Oliver is the General viewer. MassGIS has developed additional customized apps for state agencies, towns and the public.

Specialized Viewers – Watershed Protection

Specialized Viewers – Wind Energy Screening

MassGIS Application

Agricultural Preservation and Agricultural land use

Exporting MassGIS Data

Oliver Printing Function

Google Earth

Import data from a GPS unit connected to the PC Export data from a GPS unit or Smartphone running a GPS or Geocaching app. Export data from Map my Run. Using GPS with Google Earth

ArcGIS Explorer FREE desktop downloadable application from ESRI.

ArcGIS Explorer The program has some simple Analytical tools built in but a large number of Analysis functions developed by the user community. Queries – Attribute and Spatial

Query results become new data layers

ArcGIS Explorer – cont. Data can be opened as an attribute table.

ArcGIS Explorer – cont. A variety of Data types can be added

ArcGIS Explorer – cont. The Map projection of the Display can be changed

Map My Run Map My Run is a “Free” smartphone app for tracking workouts using the Phones GPS. Completed workouts can be saved to an online application where they can be viewed and exported. The application stores workouts totals mileage and time and can be used to create courses using mapping tools (create a route) Within the online application there are a number of basemaps and a profile of the route can be created and examined.
