The Liturgical Life: The Lord Christ in the Church Hymns

God’s Manifistation in Hymns 11 And it came to pass when the priests came out of the Most Holy Place … 12 and the Levites who were the singers, all those of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, stood at the east end of the altar, clothed in white linen, having cymbals, stringed instruments and harps, and with them one hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets— 13 indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, saying: “For He is good, For His mercy endures forever,” that the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, 14 so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God. (2Ch 5)

Hymns Portray the Life of Christ Joyful: Christ’s Birth; Christ’s Resurrection Solemn: Christ’s Fasting Sad: Christ’s Suffering Trisagion: Agioc –Standard; Joyful; Mournful Psalm Lord Have Mercy: Kurie e~le/~con –Standard; Joyful; Mournful; Ascetic (great fast)

Experiencing Christ’s Life Kiahk – jubilant – for the Advent of Christ –“When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Lk 1:41) Great Fast – solemn – asceticism with Christ in the wilderness –“…being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.” (Lk 4:2)

Experiencing Christ’s Life Pascha Week – mournful – great sorrow of Christ –And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. “ (Lk 22:44) Resurrection – joyful – ultimate joy –“Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.” (Jn 16:22)

Life of Christ –During Lent, all the hymns are chanted in a solemn tune befitting the season of repentance. –On Good Friday, all the hymns are chanted in a mournful tune. The mournful hymns have a very strong influence. No music in the whole world is similar to it.

Life of Christ –On Resurrection Sunday, all the hymns are chanted in a very joyful tune. –On Bright Saturday, the hymns are chanted half in the sad tune and half in the common tune – bridging the emotions between sadness and happiness – Christ’s death and Resurrection.`

Praxis Response <ere ne Maria: ][rompi eynecwc: y/e~tacmici nan: m~Vnou] pilogoc. Hail to you, Mary, the fair dove, who has borne to us God the Logos. Story of the Annunciation Six stanzas First 2 are low “But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.” “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” From the third it gets higher and continues in “exaltation” Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! My soul magnifies the Lord… For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

Megalou Christ is fasting and practicing asceticism, but we understand Who He really is: –“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Heb 4:14-16) Megalou ar,ie~reuc ictouc e~w~nac a,ranton a~gioc o~ Yeoc: The great High Priest, undefiled for ever. When the stone was sealed by the Jews and the soldiers were guarding Your undefiled Body, You arose on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world. For this reason, the heavenly powers cried out to You, O Giver of Life, “Glory to Your Resurrection, O Christ. Glory to Your kingdom. Glory to Your economy, O You who alone are the Lover of Mankind.”

Panou] My God, my God, attend to me. Why have You forsaken me? إلهي إلهي التفت إلى ، لماذا تركتني. All the words of my transgressions are far from my salvation. كلام زلاتي بعيد عن خلاصي. O my God, I will cry to You by day, but will You not hear? And by night, and it shall not be accounted for folly to me… إلهي بالنهار أصرخ اليك ، فهلا تستجيب لى. وفى الليل ولم يكن ذلك جهل منى … I however, I am a worm, and not a man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people. وأما أنا فدودة أنا، ولست إنسان ، عار للبشر ورذالة للشعوب. The feeling of loneliness and abandonment: “Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone.” (Jn 16:32) “He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our grief And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.” (Isa 53:3-4)
