Equipment Strategies j.p.streck (NC State/NCNI/NCLR

General thoughts: Like cars- look for version 2+ Look for a company -that has been around a couple of years -has money in the bank -Long haul has telecom experience -Metro does more than optronics Look for indepth NMS capabilities How do you want to use this transport equipment for the next 3-5 years (ref: T.West statement) -ring -linear -protection capability

Details: -rack space -common chassis -APS -ROADM (max filter choice) -8 lambda per transponder (min. part numbers) -GMPLS (control plane options) -Auto power adjust -NDPS

Details: (continued) -ITU-T frequencies (spacings supported) -how many bands C, L … -per lambda stats -per lambda stats per encoded protocol -O to O (??need??) -LAN PHY & WAN PHY -How are redundant lambda switched -configuration tools (incorporating design options)

Like to have: -common chassis for 5 years + -lasers switchable over the ITU-T spectrum -ROADM now -combined function on a substrate -per lambda monitoring -cost of L2/L3 equipment but! -reliability of SONET equipment -maximum monitoring -modular function pushed to a L2/L3 equipment

Look at what your needs are: -Metro -RON -Long Haul
