Bair Island Aquatic Center a Tidal Plain Location

Mission The Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC) is a nonprofit community in Silicon Valley focused on human- powered water sports including rowing, sculling, paddling, and dragon boating.

BIAC Is... A GREEN and BLUE organization A vibrant aquatic community that serves diverse ages and programs providing recreational, fitness and competitive teamwork. Financially buoyant non-profit in its tenth operational year. Volunteer run and supported Focused on: Competitive and Recreational Rowing and Paddling Building a strong and healthy membership Supporting youth development programs Increasing environmental awareness 5 “clubs” within a single regional rowing center Geographic reach serving the entire Bay Area Diverse membership ranging from 12 to >65 Novices to Elite Rowers and Paddlers

Core Principles Teach and promote amateur rowing, sculling, paddling and dragon boating to the silicon valley community Maintain a nucleus of adults to provide the coaching and technical skills and the financial and community support necessary for successful conduct of the Center…and Provide instructional and competitive programs for adult athletes. Teach and enhance the awareness of the environmental sensitivity of the local waterways and to promote responsible, low-impact use of these waterways… Sponsor and participate in community programs geared to environmental preservation of the local waterways…

History 1999 – BIAC formed as 501(c)3 organization with a $ 90K loan, repaid over 4 years 2002 – Junior programs started. Serra High joined BIAC -- Novice Adult program initiated California Dragon Boating joined BIAC -- Norcal joined BIAC Stanford Kayaking joined BIAC 2007 – Rebuilding Day: Webcor and Rebuilding Together BIAC brings facilities up to code 2008 – New Use Permit and compliance inspections complete

Annual Learn to Row program brings in new members Novice, Intermediate and Advanced masters’ teams Athletes compete at the regional and national level Juniors to Golden Masters Regular winners of US National races Races Internationally (Tahiti, Australia, Canada) Host of the US SurfSki championship CDBA -- the largest dragon boating organization in the Bay Area Organizes one of the largest competitive dragon boat festivals in the United States Oversees the largest high school and college dragon boat program in the nation.
