Steward Packaging Initiatives Sherry Arcaro, Director of Field Services

The Stakeholders What is Stewardship Ontario? A Provincially mandated, not-for-profit organization funded and governed by industry, for the purpose of operating the Blue Box Program Plan and the MHSW program. Accountable to Waste Diversion Ontario. SO collects fees from stewards and use these fees to help finance the collection, transportation, recycling or safe disposal of waste. What is a Steward? A brand owner, first importer or franchisor of one or more products sold in Ontario with packaging, or that supplies printed material that is managed in the Ontario residential waste stream

The Stakeholders cont. Blue Box Programs Where a municipality, First Nation or group of same provide curbside and/or depot collection, processing and marketing of recyclables to the residential and in some cases I.C. & I sector. In Ontario there are 235 of Blue Box Programs representing 400 Municipalities and First Nations Consumer An individual who buys products or services for personal use. A consumer is someone who can make the decision whether or not to purchase an item at the store, and someone who can be influenced by marketing and advertisements

The Ideal Food Package meets current legal requirements; compatible with food; protects against contamination from the environment; controls the product's environment; resists mechanical damage; sanitary; tamper-proof; attractive; convenient; inexpensive; lightweight; environmentally sound; functions as a preparation and/or serving vessel; sells itself; identifies the product; and supplies the required information.

Producer Considerations (to name a few) Structural design, marketing, shelf life, quality assurance, logistics, legal, regulatory, graphic design, end-use, and environmental Regulatory can involve toxicity, Food and Drug reg., packaging requirements in other jurisdictions etc. Life cycle assessment which considers the material and energy inputs and outputs to the package, the packaged product (contents), the packaging process, the logistics system, and waste management

Consumer Demand vs Packaging End-of-Life The Canadian appetite, like its population, is always changing. Foods that we once only dreamed about are now a reality. The nations population is wealthier, older, more educated, and more ethnically diverse than in the past and these changes are likely to become more pronounced in the next 20 years. Consumers will continue to demand new food products, new packaging, more convenience, new delivery systems and safer more nutritious foods. * Alberta AG and Food 2004

Trends and their impact The top convenience food trends are: Ready to Eat/Heat and Eat Foods One Dish Meals Custom Quick Food Portability Snacks and Mini Meals Innovation Between 1975 and 2008, the number of products in the average supermarket swelled from an average of 8,948 to almost 47,000, (Food Marketing Institute)

Working Together Annually access the changes in packaging through waste composition studies Curbside MRF Material Composition Studies Research projects MRF process testing for capture Sourcing and testing at end markets where needed
