High Resolution Elevation Data
ILHMP: Project Goals Maintain partnerships for acquiring new LiDAR. Establish data sharing agreements for existing LiDAR. QA/QC newly acquired data Resolve outstanding issues before contracts closed. Share standards and specifications. Set uniform requirements for deliverables. Manage and provide access to data.

“The value of control information or boundary marking is jeopardized by any disturbance to a monument, so protection is key.” -Wisconsin State Cartographer’s Office
Geodetic Leveling Research existing monuments and scout their condition. Select route to pass through, or install new, monuments. Install new monuments and take precise measurements. Verify data, submit to national database. National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Large amount of funding, and a lot of time to complete. Select vendor, contract, field work, data processing, data submission, and publication by NGS.
Illinois Geodetic Leveling Green: fieldwork complete. Data published by NGS. Orange: fieldwork in progress. Note short spur lines. Purple: planned for Fall Total by Summer, ,500 up-to-date bench marks 282 horizontal marks elevated
Recovery Reporting Condition of marks in NSRS can be reported by any person to NGS via On-line Form or DS World (free software).
Recovery Reporting Download datasheet, note location and description. Travel to location, take observation notes and photos. A pointless exercise unless you report your findings! Even with a robust statewide network of monuments, it’s current condition is largely unknown due to lack of recoveries or failure to report recoveries.
Illinois Recovery Reporting Bench mark LC0397 set in 1959 Reported Good Condition 1986 by NGS Bench mark KB0541 set in 1969 Reported Good Condition 1989 by Power Squadron What is the condition of these bench marks?

Illinois Recovery Reporting Bench mark reporting and preservation. KB0541: reported Good Condition 2013
Recovery Reporting Recovery reports are useful, even if the bench mark condition is still as previously reported. Carry knowledge forward over years or decades. Revise location description if buildings, trees, roadways, or railroad tracks have been removed or altered. Upload photos of condition and surroundings to verify. Identify as a candidate for statewide or regional efforts Replace destroyed witness posts Rehab deteriorating bench marks Campaigns for GPS Occupations or Geodetic Leveling Inspire preservation by communicating “I’m still here!”
