There are three common ways to write numbers…get your organizer and let’s get started!

Numbers can be written different ways for different reasons. Most numbers are written in standard form like the way you write your age.

On your graphic organizer, find the circle on the left. Write the word standard.

Standard form is what most people use to write the amount of something. For example, if I am writing my address, I would write 55 and not fifty- five.

Under standard on your organizer, write: *most common way *just uses digits *4,592

Next is expanded form. Find the top circle on your organizer and write expanded.

Expanded form shows the WHOLE value of a number, but it’s not commonly used for every day number writing. (You could say you are stretching the number out.) 436=

Under expanded form on your oraganizer, write: *stretching a number to its whole value *378=

The last way we will learn about is word form. If you ever want to write checks from your checking account, you will need to know how to write numbers in word form. Write word form on the last circle of your organizer.

Word form is used when your parents write a check.

Under word form, write: *writing a number in words *572=five hundred seventy- two

We’ve now learned how to write one number three different ways! Way to go!
