“A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART” I SAMUEL 13:14

I Samuel 13:14 “a man after His own heart” NIV NASB KJV “a man loyal to Him” HCSB NET

I. LOVE FOR THE WORD OF GOD

1. David loved God’s word. Psalm 119:47-48, 97 “I delight in Your commands, which I love. I will lift up my hands to Your commands, which I love, and will meditate on Your statutes. How I love Your instruction! It is my meditation all day long.”

*it protects him from sin Psalm 119:11 “I have treasured Your word in my heart so that I may not sin against You.”

*it revives him in affliction Psalm 119:50 “This is my comfort in my affliction: Your promise has given me life.”

*it gives him peace of mind Psalm 119:165 “Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your instruction; nothing makes them stumble.”

2. Jesus loved God’s word. Matthew 4:1-10

*it protects Him from sin *it revives Him in affliction *it gives Him peace of mind

3. How is your love for God’s word? Psalm 1:1-3 “How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked or take the paths of sinners or join a group of mockers! Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates

on it day and night. He is like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”

II. LOVE FOR TIMES OF PRAYER

1. David loved to pray.

*it was because God answered him Psalm 116:1-2 “I love the Lord because He has heard my appeal for mercy. Because He has turned His ear to me, I will call out to Him as long as I live.”

*it was because God blessed him Psalm 116:12-13 “How can I repay the Lord for all the good He has done for me? I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of Yahweh.”

*it was because it brought him close to God Psalm 145:18 “The Lord is near all who call out to Him, all who call out to Him with integrity.”

2. Jesus loved to pray.

*He made a point to get away Luke 5:15-16 “But the news about Him spread even more, and large crowds would come together to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. Yet He often withdrew to deserted places and prayed.”

*He prayed in times of great trial -Gethsemane -The Cross

3. How is your love for prayer? Psalm 32:1-7 “How joyful is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How joyful is the man the Lord does not charge with sin and in whose spirit is no deceit! When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day

long. For day and night Your hand was heavy on me; my strength was drained as in the summer’s heat. Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not conceal my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and You took away the guilt of my sin. Therefore, let everyone

who is faithful pray to You at a time that You may be found. When great flood waters come, they will not reach him. You are my hiding place; You protect me from trouble. You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.”

Philippians 4:6-7 “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.’

III. LOVE FOR PRAISING GOD

1. David loved to praise God.

*he praised God for His righteous judgments Psalm 119:164 “I praise You seven times a day for Your righteous judgments.”

*he praised God for His greatness Psalm 95:1-7 “Come, let us shout joyfully to the Lord, shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation! Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout triumphantly to Him in song. For the Lord is a great

God, a great King above all gods. The depths of the earth are in His hand, and the mountain peaks are His. The sea is His; He made it. His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His

pasture, the sheep under His care.”

*he praised God his whole life Psalm 104:33 “I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live.”

2. Jesus loved to praise God.

*He publically praised God in prayer Matthew 11:25-26 “At the same time Jesus said, I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father,

because this was Your good pleasure.”

*He loved to praise through song Matthew 26:30 “After singing psalms, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”

3. How is your love for praising God? Psalm 147:1 “Hallelujah! How good it is to sing to our God, for praise is pleasant and lovely.”

IV. LOVE FOR UNITY AMONG THE BREHTREN

1. David loved unity. Psalm 133:1 “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!”

*he valued friendship and unity I Samuel 18:1 “When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan committed himself to David, and loved him as much as he loved himself.”

*he understood the pain of division II Samuel 13

2. Jesus loved unity.

*He prayed for it among the disciples John 17:20-23 “I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in Me through their message. May they all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. May they also be one in Us, so the world may

believe You sent Me. I have given them the glory You have given Me. May they be one as We are one. I am in them and You are in Me. May they be made completely one, so the world may know You have sent Me and have loved them as You have loved Me.”

*He died for us to have unity Colossians 3:12-14 “Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against

another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive. Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity.”

3. How is your love for unity in the body? Romans 16:17-18 “Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause dissensions and obstacles contrary to the doctrine you have learned. Avoid them, for such people do not serve our Lord Christ but

their own appetites. They deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting with smooth talk and flattering words.”

-God was confident that David would do all He asked of him, -Jesus was willing to do all that God asked of Him. -Are you willing to do all God asks of you?
