A Sub-Culture of The United States By: Kyle Ahn METAL MUSIC

METAL MUSIC GENRES Metal Music began in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Metal music has many different genres and sounds Some of the most popular include: Classic Metal, Hair Metal, New Wave British Metal and Thrash Metal. Although these types of metal sound very different, they all belong to the same family.

THE SOUND OF METAL All types of metal use power chords played more quickly than traditional rock. All types incorporate of heavier sound, this is how it got its’ name “metal.” Metal has constantly built on itself and changed mildly from genre to genre. In a few scenarios one genre changed radically from another. Although the sound of Metal is structured and united; its’ ideology is not.

Hair Metal took Classic Metal and incorporated a lot of flare: like ecstatic live performances, standout clothes, big hair and sometimes costumes. Motley Crue, Kiss, Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister. Classic Metal sounds a lot like classic rock, but played much faster with a wailing type singer. This is when Metal was still used interchangeably with Hard Rock. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep purple. THE SOUND OF METAL Classic MetalHair Metal

If NWBM finally distinguished and mildly popularized metal; Thrash Metal finished the job. Thrash Metal took quick guitar power chords and made them lightning fast. Thrash did this by combining hardcore punk and NWBM. Metal had finally become main stream. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. New Wave British Metal (NWBM) was the first real departure from classic rock: blues were a music influence entirely discarded, no longer were there guitar riffs that outlined a chord progression, riffs now functioned as a stand- alone melody. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden THE SOUND OF METAL New Wave British Metal (NWBM)Thrash Metal

IDEOLOGICAL ISSUES IN METAL CULTURE Metal Music is very ideological, pervasive, dynamic, influential and global. Metal artists have similar opinions in many cases about politics, society and economics. Metal Heads (fans) have very similar ideologies as well. However, Metal lacks structure, organization and an agreeable base with agreeable agendas. Although agreeable upon many ideologies, the degree of importance greatly differs.

Melody – In guitar. Range – Medium to high. Contour – Up and down. Movement – Steps & skips. Focal point – Solo in middle. Rhythm – Quadruple meter, compound time. Polyrhythm. Harmony – In minor scale/Pentatonic. Dissonant sound. Texture – Transparent then full. Timbre – 2 guitars, bass guitar, double bass drum and vocals. Expression – Very fast and very loud. Serious style. Form – Is in verse and Chorus. Intro, verse 1, chorus, verse 2, chorus, verse 3, guitar solo, verse 4, chorus and finally outro. ?v=OEuBITrf-kE TESTAMENT - EERIE INHABITANTS ANALYSIS

CONCLUSION Metal Music has changed a great deal since its’ beginnings in the late 1960’s. Metal Music has accomplished widespread success in both the spread of music and ideology. Metal Music is dynamic, reaching many corners of the world. Despite all of these great things Metal Music has achieved; that which makes it great also creates weakness. Metal Music despises conformity and therefore despises any movement involving large numbers of people. Because of a lack of conformity Metal Music lacks structure and overall organization. Organization is key to turning ideology into actuality. Because of this Metal Music will remain dynamic and inspiring but never move its ideology to the final level of actuality.
