“ T HE L OVE S ONG OF J. A LFRED P RUFROCK ” Palladini Jessica, classe 5^B

…Why The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock is a love song? T HE QUESTION IS …

W HAT IS THE SONG IN LITERATURE The song is a lyrical composition organized into a variable number of stanzas There are two main parts: The song is considered the best style of the literature The main exponents are: A. Dante, F. Petrarca and G. Leopardi Exist two type of song: the “Pindaric song” and the “Free song” The song is characterized by SYNTHESIS and CONDENSATION The FOREHEAD: is composed by a same number of stanzas The TAIL: it can be divided into two parts called “vaults”

A N ITALIAN POET : G IACOMO L EOPARDI “ I L S ABATO DEL V ILLAGGIO ” o THE PRINCIPAL THEME : The song deals with the theory regarding to the pleasure. According to G. leopardi it isn’t a topical feeling, but the pleasure is only linked to the past or to the future o FORM OF THE METRICS : the song is free and it is organized into four stanzas constituted by hendecasyllables o MUSICALITY : in the song there is a remarkable number of rhymes, assonances and consonances. The lexicon alternates simple words and literary terms. The syntax is plane and various diminutives make the song light and charm

“ T HE L OVE S ONG OF J. A LFRED P RUFROCK ” PRINCIPAL THEME : The song deals with the crisis which belongs to the society and Prufrock tries to put a question in order to solve the universe’s problems. He represents a poet’s double and the song is presented like a dramatic interior monologue STRUCTURE : the song is composed by thoughts seemingly without an order. Indeed they are linked by a psychological organization and this style makes difficult to understand what is literary and what is symbolical MEANING OF THE TITLE : it is retaken from a Rudyard Kipling’s work: “ The Love Song of Har Dyal ”. What about the name “ Prufrock “ there was a shop called “ Prufrock-Litton Company “ where T. S. Eliot lived

T. S. E LIOT AND G. L EOPARDI : C OMPARISON The song deals with the society’s problems throught Proufrock’s incapacity to express his true thoughts and feelings The poet expresses his thoughts by an unreal figure ( Prufrock ) T. S. Eliot comunicates throught metaphores and symbols G. Leopardi in his song expresses his idea about the pleasure He describes a particular moment of the day throught the attitudes of common figures ( carpenter, farmer ecc. ) He doesn’t refers to the society’s problems but he writes about personal experiences T. S. Eliot “ The Love Song of J. A. Prufrock Giacomo Leopardi “ Il Sabato del Villaggio”

W HY “ T HE L OVE S ONG O F J. A LFRED P RUFROCK “ IS A LOVE SONG ? J. A. Prufrock is in love but he’s unable to express his feelings He reveals his sentiments only to his consciousness J. A. Prufrock’s incapacity represents the instability of the society The human being tries to avoid the problems rather than face them So it is a love song but the love is only a pretext to underline the real society’s problems
