Slavery was a part of the United States history that African Americans were owned and forced to work in fields by white Americans. The Underground Railroad is a path that leads slaves to freedom. Slaves hid during the day, but walked in the night to the safe houses on the Underground Railroad.

 In 1849 Harriet Tubman escaped slavery from Maryland to Canada then returns to rescue the other slaves.  It was created in the early 19 th century, the Underground Railroad was at it’s height between 1850 and 1860

 From Southern slave states to Northern free states and Canada  The Underground Railroad route- Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, across Lake Erie to Canada to freedom

 Harriet Tubman was the most well known conductor  Wanted slaves  Tice David escaped in 1831 and sang songs about the Underground Railroad  Free blacks and some slaves worked as conductors who helped escaping slaves to freedom

 It allowed African Americans to escape slavery and to no longer be owned by someone  African Americans used the Underground Railroad to find freedom and live a different life

 Runaway slave used songs, secret words, quilts to get where they were going.  The Underground Railroad was not a secret, but it was invisible to most people.  A ship was named after Harriet Tubman. It was called “Liberty Ship of Harriet Tubman.”

 The Civil War started. The War was between the northern states and the southern states.  January 1, 1863 Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that declared all slaves to be free.
