IDENTIFYING SENTENCE ERRORS Why? To make sure we’re principled and good communicators! Success on this section is imperative so we can be college-ready writers!

THAT TRICKY SAT… There are several tricks the SAT attempts to throw at you in the “Identifying Sentence Errors” section. Parallelism, Dangling Participles, Subject/Verb and Pronoun Agreement all are tricks that we’re going to cover today. The easiest way to combat or the secret these is to think of “balancing your sentence”.(Just like balancing an equation in math!).

PARALLELISM What is it? Using similar structures or “patterns” in a sentence For example: Jose had to choose between watching TV or doing his homework. (Both sides use –ing) Here’s an incorrect sentence: Sean had to choose between his brother’s baseball game and going to his girlfriend’s recital: How do we fix it? BALANCE IT!

THE RIGHT ANSWER… Sean had to choose between his brother’s baseball game and his girlfriend’s recital. Why? Going isn’t used in the first part of the sentence. Therefore, it’s not parallel and we need to take “going” out

CHECK! What is this type of sentence? I wanted to sleep in or spend the day playing video games. What’s wrong with it? How do we know? How do we fix it?

DANGLING PARTICIPLES Participles are verb forms that function as adjectives (adjectives describe a noun). In present tense (happening NOW), participles end in “-ing”. For example, She is laughing, I am teaching. Past tense participles end in –ed, en, or –t (cooked, washed, broken, written, burnt)

EXAMPLE SENTENCE I thought my mom was calling my name. (who’s calling your name?) Always ask WHO or WHAT is doing the action? It needs to come right before the adjective! Incorrect Sentence: I thought I heard a strange rattle driving my car. Who was driving the car? (Me, not the rattle!) Correct: Driving my car, I thought I heard a strange rattle.

CHECK! What is this type of sentence? Staring blankly, the computer screen flickered while Joanna sat at her desk. What’s wrong with it? How do we know? How do we fix it?

CORRECT PRONOUN AGREEMENT Pronouns replace nouns. The noun pronoun replaces is called the antecedent. Pronouns are “his, her, their, its, etc” Example sentence: Everything we do, we do it for you. (pronouns are balanced)

EXAMPLES Incorrect Sentence: Much of what we did this summer with our friends was not planned, but undertaken thanks to his encouragement. What’s wrong? (we and our do not match with “his”. Who is HE anyway?) Corrected Sentence: Much of what we did this summer with our friends was not planned, but undertaken thanks to their encouragement.

CHECK! What do we have to watch out for? He wanted one, but they were not ready. How do we fix it?

SUBJECT/VERB AGREEMENT Subject and Verb Agreement is the trickiest of them all! We know that the Subject, or the who of the sentence, but be in balance with the “what” or the action (the verb). Singular must match singular, and plural must match plural!

EXAMPLES Correct Sentence: The bright fiberglass scriptures of Luis Jimenez have received critical acclaim not only in his home state, New Mexico, but also In New York. (Scriptures and Have are both plural) Incorrect Sentence: The funny student of Ms. Lamphier do not have time to go to the movies. How do we fix it? (student matches with…DOES)

CHECK! What’s the trickiest of them all? Ice skating, with its emphasis on technique, artistry, and discipline are one of the most demanding sports. What’s wrong with this sentence? How do we fix it?

LAST.. Always check ALL the answer choices to make sure they are correct. Make sure each of the answer choices is “balanced” with the rest of the sentence.

YOUR TURN!! Identify the error in each of your sentences on your group’s sentence strips. ( 4 strips, one for each type of error) Fix the sentence. Prepare a rationale for how you fixed the error and why. Take 5 minutes!

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Practice Questions These are TRICKY! Be CAREFUL!! Write a corrected sentence in the right margin.

CHECK!

EXIT TICKET Complete the exit ticket! Write the corrected sentence in the margin. Keep up the AWESOME WORK!!
