KAURI’S 7 PRINCIPLES OF A SMART COLLABORATION “Changing the e-waste cycle” WorldLoop & Recupel

ABOUT WORLDLOOP Awareness Creation Set up Facilities Quality Assurance Engage Collaboration WorldLoop’s mission is to eliminate the negative impact of e-waste by turning it into sustainable, human and economic resources. It will achieve this by facilitating the creation of accessible, environmentally sound, socially responsible and sustainable e-waste recycling solutions in developing countries… Founded in 2009 by Close the Gap Serving Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America Operational in 7 countries across 2 continents 900+ tons of e-waste collected and processed 90+ tons of hazardous waste spared from landfills

ABOUT RECUPEL Founded in 2001 by the industry –Best of class in Europe –More than 115,000 tons of e-waste collected and recycled in Belgium in 2013 –10.41 kg/inhabitant National solution for the take-back obligation E-Waste => removal of hazardous waste => optimal recuperation of resources Founding member of WEEE-forumWEEE-forum The Recycling Cycle

ABOUT OUR PARTNERSHIP VIDEO

7 PRINCIPLES OF A SMART COLLABORATION 1.Identify a challenge core to your sustainability strategy and relevant to stakeholders 2.Mobilize a team of complementary actors 3.Be transparent on why you participate 4.Be clear on desired outcome and be result driven 5.Share each other’s assets 6.Manage the partnership 7.Keep an open and appreciative attitude

1. Core challenge to your sustainability strategy and relevant to stakeholders STAKEHOLDERCHALLENGERELEVANCY ICT4DEVELOPMENT (Close the Gap) Lack of sustainable recycling solutions in country CT4D promotes zero waste to landfills through responsible reuse, not having a local solution threatens the communities ICT4D aims to support LOCAL PRACTITIONERS (WEEE Centre) Lack of knowledge and expertise to treat e-waste in a sustainable fashion Poses risks to their individual and community health, increases pollution, TAKE-BACK SYSTEMS (Recupel) Awareness that occasions of illegal e- waste leakages still occur Beyond compliance leadership supporting a solution that is impacted by their role in Belgium RECYCLING INDUSTRY (Coolrec, Umicore, etc) Inability to access hazardous fractions for treatment (too small-scale to be commercially plausible). Beyond core business sustainable leadership and helps to incubate presales conditions in these countries. IGO’S (UNIDO) Limited ability to maintain continued maintenance and monitoring on an ongoing basis Key to the overall strategy for green economies but focus on scaling up, need support in day-to-day management of projects

2. Mobilize a team | 3. Transparency 4. Desired Outcomes & Results

5. Share each other’s assets Open-door policy on knowledge transferCatalyst for knowledge transfer

6. Manage the partnership Solid partnership frameworkRoles & Responsibilities Leadership commitment

7. Keep an open and appreciative attitude Cultural differences Understanding each others constraints Investing resources to understand the project

Thank you…
