ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands Place Value All About: ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands October 27th, 2012 Elissa Stuchal

Let’s review what we already know

Example: 3 4 9 8 What is place value? Place value is the value of a digit as determined by its position in a number Example: Place Value Chart Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 3 4 9 8 By looking at the place value chart, you can see that the number 4 is in the hundreds place.

Understanding a Place Value Chart Reading and writing whole numbers can best be explained by using a place value chart. In our number system the placement of each digit in a numeral is important. Each place has a certain value. You read a place value chart from left to right. Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 3 4 9 8

The value of a digit depends on its place in the numeral What each place represents… Thousands = 1, 000 Hundreds = 100 = Tens 10 Ones = 1 oRemembero The value of a digit depends on its place in the numeral

You can also think of it as… In the number 3,498, the 9 is in the tens place. If we were asked how many tens are in the number 3,498, we would say 9. For Example: Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 3 4 9 8 You can also think of it as… 9 Tens = 90

Let’s practice

The first one is done for you. In your notebook write the name of the place for each underlined digit. The first one is done for you. 526 6. 300 4,015 7. 892 6,203 8. 1,623 1, 781 9. 17 902 10. 346 Ones
