Quitting/Withdrawal Dustin Clarke

What is Withdrawal? Withdrawal is the process of your body getting used to the absence of the drug that you used to use. Ex. Alcohol- waking up with a hangover.

Methods of Quitting 1.Cold Turkey- Dropping the substance. 2. Tampering Off- Cutting back on substance until the quit deadline.

Smoking/Tobacco Symptoms Feeling Down Trouble sleeping Grouchy Trouble thinking clearly or concentrating Decrease in Heart Rate More hungry

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms Shaky Hands Sweaty Mild anxiety Nausea/ Vomiting Insomnia DT- Delirium Tremens – Severe case of alcohol withdrawal. – Happens after a period of heavy drinking. – hours after last drink.

Prevention Relapse- Breakdown or failure in attempt to change a behavior (constant failure). Slip/ Lapse- single mistake or short lived failure. High Risk Situation- Putting oneself in a bad situation. Triggers- Reminder of doing drug.

Long-Term Benefits Smoking Decreased risk of heart disease. Decreased risk of stroke. Decrease risk of memory loss.
