Report of the UN GWG on Big Data International Conference on Big Data in Beijing First meeting of the GWG in Beijing Terms of reference of the GWG Programme of work and deliverables Results of the UNSD/UNECE survey on Big Data projects (BACKGROUND document) Points for discussion

Terms of Reference 1.To provide a strategic vision, direction and coordination for a global programme on big data for official statistics, including for indicators of the post-2015 development agenda; 2.To promote practical use of big data sources, including cross-border data, while building on existing precedents and finding solutions for the many existing challenges, including: methodological, legal, privacy and IT issues

Task Teams 1.Advocacy and Communication – Brochures, papers, presentations, videos – Good practices of using Big Data 2.Big Data and SDG indicators – Assessment of the potential use of Big Data for monitoring progress on the 169 SDG targets 3.Access and Partnerships – Assessment of existing good practices of data access – A set of principles as conditions and template for MOU 4.Training, Skills, Capacity Building – Assessment tool for the needs of Big Data skills – Corresponding training curriculum

Task Teams 5.Cross-cutting issues (Quality framework) – Inventory of methodologies, data visualisation tools as well as quality assurance frameworks 6.Mobile Phone Data – Lessons learned from one or more pilot projects using mobile phone data 7.Satellite Imagery – Assessment of statistical methods for estimating quantities of interest, using satellite imagery data 8.Social Media Data – Lessons learned from one or more pilot projects using social media data
