© CommNet 2013 Biotechnology – what is it? What do you think the word biotechnology means? It means using living things to create something that is useful. The ‘living things’ are usually micro-organisms which are very small living things!

© CommNet 2013 Biotechnology – how is it used? Biotechnology is used to: make food, e.g. bread, yogurt or cheese; make medicines, e.g. antibiotics.

© CommNet 2013 Biotechnology – is it new? Biotechnology sounds like something new but it has been happening for thousands of years! It has been used to brew beer, make bread and cheese for hundreds of years. The antibiotic, Penicillin, was made on large scale during the Second World War (1940s).

© CommNet 2013 Biotechnology and bread How do you think biotechnology is used to make bread? Yeast is a micro-organism which is used to make bread dough.

© CommNet 2013 Biotechnology and bread Yeast is added to flour. Warm water is added and this brings the yeast to life. As the yeast grows it releases a gas called carbon dioxide, the gas makes the dough rise.

© CommNet 2013 Biotechnology and yogurt Find out how yogurt is made and identify where biotechnology is used.

© CommNet 2013 Biotechnology – future? How do you think Biotechnology will help us in the future? Could it… provide a source of energy? help us to recycle? Make feed for animals?
