Module 4: Agenda Lesson 1: User ManagementLesson 2: Creating and Editing User AccountsLesson 3: Overview of the Client ConnectorLesson 4: Deploying & Managing Client ComputersLesson 5: Troubleshooting Client Deployment

USER MANAGEMENT Lesson 1

User Management and Identity  SBS uses Active Directory for authentication and authorization  Same as Windows Server 2008 R2  User accounts are assigned usernames & passwords  Password policy is enforced  Simplified for small business environment  Accounts can be Standard user or Administrator user  Built-in “Administrator” account is disabled  Unified logon across all access areas  Optional Federation with cloud services

Password Policy & Access Level Strength/complexity of passwords can be set to:  Weak  Medium  Best  Strong Level of access for user accounts can be:  Standard  Administrator

CREATING AND EDITING USER ACCOUNTS Lesson 2

Creating User Accounts Add User wizard provides streamlined process:  Enter user’s full name  Accept default username or modify as desired  Enter password, must meet policy requirements  Specify access level, Standard or Administrator  Assign access rights to shared folders  Select Remote Web Access settings

Modifying, Disabling, & Removing Users User Account Properties  First and last name  Switch between Standard & Administrator access level  Change the password  Disable/enable an account; different than removing  Modify shared folder and Remote Web Access settings  Specify which computers a user can connect to remotely

OVERVIEW OF THE CLIENT CONNECTOR Lesson 3

Client Connector  Easily join and update computers in the SBS 2011 Essentials environment  Abstract difficult concepts such as Active Directory domain join  Simplify user profile migration for Windows Pro SKUs  Enable partners to add value onto client computers with additional software via extensibility model  Install process starts from a web page  No media or SMB share

Supported Clients Windows client SKUs with latest service packs Windows 7 Windows Vista SP2 Windows XP SP3 (except Windows XP 64-bit editions) Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” and above

DEPLOYING AND MANAGING CLIENT COMPUTERS Lesson 4

Connecting Client Computers Benefits for connected computers:  Health monitoring  Automatic backup to SBS server  Ability to manage SBS server from the client Getting connected:  Launch Connect wizard from a web page:  First step is to verify and install prerequisites  May require a reboot

Connecting Client Computers, cont. Once prereq’s are met: 1.User provides their credentials  Check for admin account, if so warn the user 2.Select whether or not to move user’s settings and data  Greatly eases the transition from peer-to-peer networks to SBS  User retains their familiar working environment 3.Enter a computer description * Requires supported business client SKU

Connecting Client Computers, cont. Initial client configuration options:  Wake client computer to perform backups to the server?  All connected PCs are backed up according to the schedule defined on the Dashboard’s Computers and Backups page  Administrators can exclude PCs from being backed up  Participate in CEIP?

Managing Client Computers Dashboard Computers and Backup page  Shows every computer & server connected to the SBS server  Tasks that apply to all computers:  Help with connecting computers  Additional client backup tasks  Tasks for specific computers:  View computer properties (includes backup status/details)  Start a manual backup  Restore files or folders  Customize computer’s backup  Remove computer

TROUBLESHOOTING CLIENT DEPLOYMENT Lesson 5

Unable to locate server  Client’s IP address is not consistent with the SBS server  No IP address: NIC driver issues, incorrect protocol bindings  Wrong subnet: incorrect static IP address assignment  Automatic Private IP Address: DHCP server is unavailable  Physically disconnected Resolution  Verify network connectivity  Verify NIC properties Resolving Client Deployment Issues

Incorrect date and time  Client’s clock is not in sync with the server’s clock (more than 5 minutes difference)  Prevents client from establishing secure communications with the server Resolution  Ensure the time is consistent through the SBS network  Use an external time source
