Translational research: Building the pathway for collaboration; An insider’s insight David Sallah Health Education England

Why an insider? The future of healthcare and workforce development Education and training – the Challenges Suggestions for the future Focus of presentation

‘How do we ensure the education and training is fit for purpose to deliver high quality care over the next years?’ Question…

The Challenges of the Future Changes in Society More people of all ages living with multiple illnesses A growing number of older people, many with multiple illnesses The earlier onset of co-morbidities in those living in deprived areas Challenging economic circumstances

Changes in Health & Social Care More care outside the hospital, including self-care and community-care More focus on prevention More ‘integrated’ care, with closer working across divides Increasing use of existing technology Development of new technology (e.g., genomics)

Changes in Patient Demand 1 9/10 people think services could be better 1/2 think that patients should be treated with greater dignity & respect 1/3 worry that services are not safe 1/4 say that professionals aren’t interested in their views 1/4 say they aren’t involved in decisions about their care 1 healthwatch.co.uk

“HEE exists for one reason alone – to improve the quality of care delivered to patients.” Success criteria Improvements in safety Improvements in experience Improvements in clinical outcomes Spreading innovation Around £4.9bn funding Around £10,000 a minute Around 1900 HEE staff supporting.. 91,000 non- medical pre-reg 44,600 post grad medical and dentistry 23,000 under grad medical and dentistry Around 159,000 students in system now Privacy, dignity, respect

HEE Funding & Levers Around £4.9bn funding annually Around 159,000 students in the system now Spending around £9,500 a minute on Education and Training

Social, political, economic and environmental Drivers of change…

Difficult to predict the future….Nuffield 1999 predictions not all correct The Shape of Training and Caring Reviews will build upon the outcomes and evidence base of HEE Framework 15 HEE plans to base long-term workforce strategy on the anticipated needs of future patients. Three pillars Global Drivers of Change People and Patients of the future The future workforce HEE Strategic Framework 15

……Five years NHS Five Year Forward View: ` Greater focus on prevention Patients will gain far greater control of their own care Barriers will be broken down in the NHS New care delivering models, including development of integrated out-of-hospital care Multi-specialty Community and Health & Social Care Providers Need to invest in primary care, including community nurses Enhancement of technology and exploiting technology revolution

WORKING TO ACHIEVING PARITY IN PRACTICE

Parity in Practice Our goal: A workforce that.. Is psychologically minded Applies mindfulness approaches in practice Practices safely and reflectively Takes a life course approach to learning & practice Able to treat mental and physical health as interconnected wellbeing priorities

The domains of the EOF: Domain 1: excellent education Domain 2: competent and capable staff Domain 3: flexible workforce, receptive to research and innovation Domain 4: NHS values and behaviours Domain 5: widening participation Delivering the NHS Education Outcome Framework

DEFINITION OF TERMS The long-term effects on later health or disease risk of physical or social exposures during pre conception, pregnancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood and later adult life Facilitate staff development so that they meet the needs of people who use services effectively and ensure equal access to education and training for all staff Promote multi disciplinary learning and skills development Provide a coherent learning and teaching platform from where further improvements and impact of education and training on outcomes for people could be measured Life Course Approach Psychological mindedness (PM) refers to a person's capacity for self-examination, self-reflection, introspection and personal insight. It is the ability interest and ability to be in touch with and reflect on his or her psychological states and processes. Psychological mindedness The state of being attentive to and aware of what is taking place in the present Examples of Interventions: Acceptance & commitment therapy; dialectical behavioural therapy; Mindfulness-based Cognitive therapy and Stress reduction; Mindfulness

Education and Practice Why are we thinking differently? Aiming to link education and training to practice Able to link staff behavioural change to improved outcomes for patients and their carers Make training and education a front line issue Provide the evidence base for effectiveness of education and training Create world class model of education and training

Not starting from scratch… NMC Revalidation Consultation Francis Report Prime Ministers Commission Cavendish Report Willis Report

Raising the bar !!!!!!! For everyone – care assistants to academics!

Moving from Current Model Providers decide the nature of education Takes most initiatives to update content Wide education/research and practice gap Most research stops at the point of writing the final report The Future Model HEI act as a service provider Aim to build long term relationship Aim to close the education/research and practice gap Improve on knowledge exchange Contribute to improving patient care Transforming the Education and Practice Landscape

The process by which a providerr changes its business model to provide a holistic solution to the customer, helping the customer to improve its competitiveness, rather than just engaging in a single transaction through the sale of a physical product. “Servitization is the process by which the organization changes from being just focused on products... to being focused more around the delivery of a capability.” SERVITIZATION

“To really get the value out of it, you’ve got to change your business model. Change your people. Change your processes to take advantage of the technologies.” SERVITIZATION Visit

The Future of Healthcare: Developing the workforce Many of tomorrow’s workforce are here today. Much greater priority needs to be given to developing the skills and competences of the current workforce, to better meet the needs of patients today and tomorrow…. Without building capacities and capabilities in our workforce for a world of continuous change and emergence of new roles and possibilities we risk being perpetually out of step and continually rebuilding our workforce to do yesterday’s, not tomorrow’s, health care work…. Kings Fund, NHS & Social Care for now and for the future
