What is Windows Update? Windows Update is an online program on the Microsoft Website that updates your computer. You can use Windows Update to download both critical security updates and optional updates that aren't as critical.

What does it do? It offers the latest updates for Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, and other Microsoft programs. It helps keep your computer up-to-date with any new versions of programs already on your computer. Such as virus protection, Windows Media Player and Adobe Reader.

How to use it. First you need to connect to the Internet. Once connected click Start. Next click on Control Panel. Then on the left hand side of the screen you will see the Windows Update link. Click on the link.

How to use it. The Windows Update page will pop up and you will have two choices. The first is an Express Install (Recommended) if you are in a hurry. The second is a Custom Install If you're interested in browsing all of the updates available (including critical and security updates)

Click on the one you want and the website will scan your computer and find any programs that are not up-to-date. It will then up-load the newer versions on to your computer. After the programs have been installed, you will be asked to close all programs and restart your computer. This will complete the Windows Update process.

Automatic Windows Update. If you don’t visit Windows Update regularly, you can get automatic updates from Microsoft so you don't have to remember to check for critical updates that help to keep your computer secure. All you have to do is determine how often and what time of day or night you want Automatic Updates to connect to the Internet and scan your computer for updates, Automatic Updates automatically keeps your computer current.

Automatic Windows Update. Instead of giving you a list of updates for your computer, Automatic Updates will download and install them at your convenience. Each time there's a new update, a balloon appears in the lower right corner of your screen to alert you. Click the balloon to start the installation process for the latest critical updates for your computer to help protect it from viruses.
