Representing Rational Numbers on the Number Line Flipped Classroom

What are we going to know? MCC6.NS.5 Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, debits/credits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation. MCC6.NS.6 Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates. MCC6.NS.6a Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., −(−3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite. MCC6.NS.6c Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane. MCC6.NS.7 Understand ordering and absolute value or rational numbers.

When are negative numbers used and why are they important? Negative numbers are used to represent quantities that are less than zero such as: ●temperature ●scores in games or sports ●a loss of income in business ●or when you "owe" someone money

Why is it useful for me to know the absolute value of a number? Absolute value is useful in ordering and graphing positive and negative numbers. Because absolute value tells me how far away a number is from zero, we can use it to help order information.

What are opposites and what characteristics do they have on the number line? Opposites are defined as two different numbers that have the same absolute value. Facts about opposites: ●When opposite numbers are added, the result is zero. o For example 3 + (-3) = 0 ●To get the opposite of a number, change the sign. o For example the opposite of +6 is -6 or the opposite of -7 is +7 (or just 7)

How are opposites and absolute value related? ●The absolute values of opposite numbers are the same. o For example |-23| = 23 AND |23| = 23 ●The opposite numbers are the same distance from zero on a number line. o For example |3| and |-3| are the same distance from zero.

How do I compare and order rational numbers? Positive and negative integers can be represented on a number line. In the same way, positive and negative rational numbers can be represented on a number line. You can use a number line to help you compare and order negative rational numbers.
