Overview Unit: Social Studies Grade Level: 3 rd Lesson: Teaching Cultural Differences

Objectives Have students understand that everyone is alike in many ways and different in many ways. Know that everyone has different interests, motivations, skills, and talents.

Objectives Contd. Students will have knowledge that there are people who dress, act,and talk very differently from themselves.

Activity 1: Our Family!! Discuss how a family is made up of two or more people in love, and are different in size, roles, rules, traditions, and beliefs. Show students pictures of our families and describe how we are related to each member.

Our Family!!! Contd. Have each child draw a picture of the members of their families. When this is completed, have the children share their pictures with the rest of the class.

Our Family!! Materials: Picture of our family Paper Crayons and/or colored pencils

Activity 2: World Cookbook Send a letter home to the parents/guardians, asking that each child brings in a recipe that represents their culture. As a class make a cookbook of all of these different recipes

World Cookbook Contd. Make copies of the cookbooks to send home for each child’s family to enjoy.

Even Though I’m Lavender Activity

Overview Students will fill out a chart listing the names of groups represented by their classmates. This includes races, ethnic backgrounds, genders, religions, age groups, and disabilities. THOUGHT # 1 Even though I am lavender, and others have been mean to me, I don’t have to be mean to them in return. Instead, I will show them by my actions that I am proud of who I am and of the way I act. Discussion Questions: 1. Do you remember a time when people were mean to you? 2. THOUGHT # 2 Even though I am lavender, I don’t make excuses or blame others for who I am. I do my best and take responsibility for my actions. Discussion Questions: 1. Have you made excuses or blamed others before? 2. What could you have done that would have been better?

THOUGHT # 3 People make fun of me and tell me because I’m lavender, I won’t be able to get the job I want. I know that this is not true and I will fulfill my dream if I work hard. Discussion Questions: 1. What do you want to be when you get older? 2. How might you accomplish this?

The Patch Work Quilt Activity

Overview Students will read the book The Patch Work Quilt by: Valerie Flournoy Students will discuss what a quilt is. Students will make a quilt for the class.

Materials Needed Book- The Patch Work Quilt By: Valerie Flournoy Oak tag patches Pencils, Markers, Crayons

Procedure Show the students an oak tag patch. Explain to the students that they are to draw one thing about themselves on the patch. Put all of the students patches together to make one large quilt.

Discussion and Display Each student will explain their patch to the class. The quilt will be hung in the classroom for everyone to see.
