SKIN GRAFTING: A BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING PURSUIT BRYAN LINDLEY

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING THE FUTURE OF SKIN GRAFTS  There is a great need for cost effective and friendly synthetic bioengineered skin grafts.  About 4,500 people die each year due to burns. There are many others that suffer from chronic illness such as diabetes.  Further research in bioengineered skin grafts would better the outcomes of patients with skin defects

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?  Donor sites are limited in severe burn victims and chronic illness patients.  Wound contraction and scarring are results of current skin grafting.

APLIGRAF

TISSUE ENGINEERED SKIN GRAFTS

FUTURE OF SKIN REPLACEMENT “Researchers in the field of skin tissue engineering are still working on the final goal of developing a skin graft which has all the features of healthy human skin and is capable of replacing human skin completely.”
