WHAT IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS?  Pain in the bottom of you foot Where is it located?  Pain located over the anterior medial aspect of the heel  May also be along the longitudinal arch

CAUSES  Wrong type of footwear  Inappropriate footwear for activity and foot type  Low and high arches  Can cause abnormal stress on the feet  Type of surface  During walking/running  Increased intensity or duration of walking/running  History of diabetes, arthritis, or cancer  Bone tumor  Bone cyst

SIGNS/SYMPTOMS  heel pain  numbness or burning sensation after activity  swelling  lumps  scars  bruising  foot deformities  recurrent fever  multiple joint pains  loss of appetite  weight/pain at night can indicate a tumor

STATISTICS  Panchbhavi states that more than 2 million Americans seek treatment for plantar fasciitis per year  According to Young, it is twice as common in women than men  Panchbhavi claims that the average age is about 45 years old  Persich says that it accounts for about 10% of runner-related injuries  11-15% of all foot symptoms requiring professional care according to Persich

STATISTICS CONTINUED  Young states that it is thought to occur in 10% of the general population  According to Hoebeke, plantar fasciitis accounts for about 1 million office visits annually  Hoebeke also says that plantar fasciitis is most common cause of heel pain  Hoebeke mentions that it is more common in younger runners, middle-aged persons who are overweight and those whose occupations require prolonged standing

CARE/TREATMENT/PREVENTION  Modify activity  Avoid impact activities  ex. swimming instead of running  Reduction of body weight  Use soft cushions or insoles in footwear  Tape (provide arch support)  Stretch and strengthen
