Teacher Survey for Healthy Eating and Active Living Resources Southwestern Alberta Teachers Convention 2008

Questionnaire purpose: Is there a need / desire for a provincial website that highlights credible healthy eating and active living (HEAL) information and resources FOR TEACHERS? What is teacher access to internet? What are common barriers in accessing resources for teachers? What resources are needed/wanted? What is the best way to get HEAL information to teachers?

Main resources currently used for HEAL education: Canada’s Food Guide Alberta Education related resources Multiple sources including google searches and school-generated resources

Current Internet Access Only 2% of teachers reported NO access to internet Over 80% had a combination high/low speed access from home and school No one reported only dial-up access

Current Internet Usage 74% of teachers use the internet to prepare lesson plans weekly or daily 3% never use the internet for lesson plans 6% never use the internet for HEAL info or resources 60% are satisfied with the information they access

Preferred methods of receiving HEAL resources

How often would teachers access a credible HEAL website? 5% said daily Almost 50% said weekly 25% said monthly

What should be included on website? 2% said they were not interested in a website Most respondents indicated multiple answers to support: health outcomes for nutrition and active living, DPA supports, cross-curricular outcomes for HEAL

How long teaching? 40% of respondents had been teaching over 15 years

What grades teaching? 46% of teachers surveyed taught elementary grades

Subjects taught? 22% did not teach any HEAL related subjects All others taught one or a combination of: DPA, CALM, PE, Food Studies, Health and Life Skills

Use of Implementation Guides

PE Specialist? 77% of teachers surveyed were NOT PE specialists (having a degree in PE or kinesiology).

Where to go from here? Analyze other regional data Combine and analyze provincial data (RHPC’s have collected data from NLHR, Aspen, Calgary, Capital, ??) Determine next steps for RHPC’s and Health Regions Collaboratively and/or independently?
