Property Development Finance Guide to Library Resources

What We’ll Cover Today Background knowledge of property and economic issues Legal Resources to assist you in learning about government policy Local information on land costs Property Market Facts and Growth Information About Building Costs Ways of getting help

The Library Catalogue A good place to search for books on property development is with the library catalogue. Top right is a bit of a search for the keywords ‘property development finance’ If a book is being borrowed press the button (bottom right) and it will be reserved for you

There are 2 ways to extend your search for books (and journals!) 1.) The BONUS Catalogue, which is accessible from our own catalogue: BONUS is a family of other university libraries that will loan to us. 2.) Interlending (which is for any books you can’t find with BONUS, and for journal articles, conference proceedings etc that UTS does not stock) Tip: Search for ‘interlending service’ in the search box on the UTS library website:

Rawlinson’s – for building costs (available by this title in the library catalogue)

RP Data (provides the same service as APM, but covers the entire Sydney Metropolitan Area)

Residential Property Prospects This is a hardcopy service, available in the Closed Reserve Section of UTS library: call number: RESI. It’s published by BIS Shrapnel. This is a wonderful resource, containing information such as: residential property cycle graph, demand for housing, key economic indicators – including consumption, private investment in dewellings, gross national expenditure, inflation and wages /cpi, etc., approvals, home loans, migration interstate, vacancy rates AND MORE!

Other Similar Publications (from BIS Shrapnel) These are also hardcopy, and available from Closed Reserve Building Industry Prospects buil This contains forecast of dwelling commencements Building in Australia ( ) /3 (ed.28) This contains projections for the next 15 years for things like: property values by captial city demand for dwellings propects for building dwellings, building activity by state

Rent and SalesReports Are available from the NSW Government Department of Housing website – Choose rent and sales report from quick links The reports chart the change in land costs

More Materials Residex reports – RESI (2009) This report covers the state of the property market for new south wales and the ACT RESI (2009) Office market reports – Type this title into the catalogue to access a market report for offices across australian capitals – or try the link below:

ABS Housing Statistics The Australian Bureau of Statistics also provides statistics for average sale prices and rent costs for property stretching back to the late 1980’s Just type ‘ausstats’ into the catalogue to access this service, then search for ‘house prices’ using the search box on the top right of screen or browse for housing statistics by choosing statistics – topic – industry - construction

Stats are Available By State and Capital City

And also by postcode

Journal Articles Journal Articles tend to be of a more limited scope than books (ie: they are shorter in length), however there are more of them and they come out more frequently than books. Journal articles can be located in databases Lists of databases good for Property studies are included in the databases search page under Property Development

Databases for Property Development

Sample database: AGIS Plus Text (good for Australian government policy articles)

Sample Database: Science Direct (good for articles about Property Development Finance)

Legal Resources – LawOne (used to find legislation)

Legal Resources – Legal Online (used to find case law and commentaries) Commentaries Case Law

Referencing The Harvard(UTS) is the preferred referencing system for your faculty. There is a guide to it on the library website. It comprises two main features- quoting (in- text referencing) and a bibliography, or reference list.

Referencing Software - Endnote Software such as EndNote will help you with your referencing. EndNote can export references from the internet, store them, and can place them into your word processor. The library runs training in EndNote

Need Help – Ask a Librarian! you can reach me via the ‘by ’ service, or directly
