Cyber bullying is… …when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones.

Some Facts Nine out of ten middle school students have had their feelings hurt online. Nearly 35% of kids have been threatened online and almost one in five have had it happen more than once.

More Facts About 21% of kids have received mean or threatening s. Girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber- bullying.

The many forms of cyberbullying: Flaming – Online “fights” using angry and vulgar language. Harassment – Repeatedly sending offensive, rude, and insulting messages. Denigration – Sending or posting cruel gossip or rumors about a person to damage his or her reputation or friendships.

The many forms of cyberbullying: Impersonation – Using someone’s account and sending messages that would classify as one of the other forms. Outing / Trickery – Sharing someone’s secrets or embarrassing information or images online of tricking someone into revealing the same information online. Exclusion – Intentionally excluding someone from an online group.

Who are cyber bullies? ** From a recent classroom-based survey of a random sample of approximately 2,000 middle-school students from a large school district in the United States. ** Students were asked whether or not they had experienced cyber bullying.
