Presentation transcript:

Warm-up Take out your earth’s layers foldable. Your homework is now due tomorrow. Keep your homework and DO NOT turn it in. Take a notes page from the pink basket. The notes are a half sheet. CROSS OUT THE WORD DENSITY. WRITE TEMPERATURE INSTEAD.  Glue it on the next blank page in your INB. Get ready to take some notes.

How much do you know about your planet? Layers of the Earth How much do you know about your planet?

True or False The Earth is made up of 3 layers. Answer: False 4 Layers The Crust is the thickest layer. The Inner Core is solid. Answer: False Mantle Answer: True The Mantle has liquid rock. Answer: True (so does the Outer Core)

Crust The crust is the outer most layer. Where we walk and live. The crust is made up of the continents and the ocean floor. The crust’s density and temperature increase with it’s depth. THICKNESS: The crust is up to 32 Kilometers (here to Stone Mountain) thick. TEMPERATURE: 0 degrees Fahrenheit to 1590 degrees Fahrenheit COMPOSITION: The continental crust consists of rocks such as granite, sandstone, and marble. The oceanic crust consists of basalt.

Lithosphere There are two kinds of crust: continental and oceanic. Yes, there is even crust under the ocean! WHICH LAYERS: It has two parts, the crust and the upper mantle. PREFIX: The lithosphere (geosphere) is the "solid" part of Earth

Mantle The mantle is the layer under the crust. The Mantle’s density and temperature increase with it’s depth. THICKNESS: It is up to 2,897 kilometers (from here to Arizona) thick. TEMPERTATURE: Top layer - hot solid rock 1590 degrees Fahrenheit; Bottom layer - hot liquid rock 3992 degrees Fahrenheit COMPOSITION: The mantle is made up of rocks such as silicon, aluminum, iron, and magnesium.

Asthenosphere The plates of the lithosphere float on the asthenosphere WHICH LAYERS: The plastic like layer below the lithosphere is the asthenosphere PREFIX: Asthenes means weak

Outer Core THICKNESS: The outer core is 2253 kilometers (here to New Mexico) thick. TEMPERATURE: The temperature ranges from 4000 – 9000 degrees Fahrenheit COMPOSITION: Made up of the hot liquid metals iron and nickel.

Inner Core The very center of the earth The inner core is solid. It is under so much pressure from the layers above that the metal cannot spread out and become liquid. THICKNESS: 1287 kilometers thick – From here to Dallas, TX TEMPERATURE: The inner core is very hot, about 9000 degrees fahrenheit COMPOSITION: Made of the metals iron and nickel
