2010 Agricultural Water Resource Development Workshop Series HOW TO APPLY FOR ASSISTANCE “PRELIMINARY SITE ASSESSMENT – THE PROCESS”

SUGGESTED STEPS FOR AGRICULTURAL POND EVALUATION & APPROVAL TO BUILD Note: This preliminary assessment does NOT constitute a formal soil or geologic investigation or a pond design, and should not be used for construction. The information on this form represents a preliminary site assessment to evaluate the feasibility of a potential pond site, and assist in determining the priority for engaging engineering services for a more thorough site investigation and design.

SUGGESTED STEPS FOR AGRICULTURAL POND EVALUATION & APPROVAL TO BUILD 1. Contact NRCS/SWCD to complete Preliminary Site Assessment for New Ponds  Review potential alternatives for agricultural water needs  Review potential regulatory requirements  Determine availability of technical and/or financial assistance 2. Secure preliminary pond layout (DLR Dam permit requirements) 3. USDA-FSA Farm Serial Number - initiate AD-1026 for Wetland Conservation (WC) certification; Confidentiality Agreement 4. No USDA-FSA Farm Serial Number, take Preliminary Site Assessment for New Ponds to Corps, DLR & DWQ for a preliminary assessment of regulatory requirements 5. Construct pond only after securing required permits and/or exemptions

SITE CHARACTERISTICS Estimated drainage area: 150 acres Estimated pool area: 10 acres Estimated depth of water: 8 feet Estimated embankment height: 14 feet Estimated length of dam: 150 feet Hazard classification (if known): low List soil map units in the area that are suitable for: core trenchoffsite embankmentoffsite PRELIMINARY SITE ASSESSMENT FOR NEW PONDS

Is site’s topography generally suitable for an embankment or excavated pond, including an emergency spillway? __Y__ (Y/N) If No, explain in Notes Section. Do the physical characteristics of the site appear suited for development of a pond that can address the purpose indicated above and satisfy the program requirements? __Y__ (Y/N) If No, explain in Notes Section. Are there any known geologic or soil features that may restrict ability of pond to hold water, or require special design or construction? __Y__ (Y/N) If Yes, explain in Notes Section.
