Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 The Carechem Marine Service: What is it? Support for packaged or bulk incidents providing: Technical advice to aid response operations Advice to ensure the safety of crew, salvers, public Advice on the mitigation of the impacts of incidents How is the Service provided? 24/7 dedicated telephone number Worldwide cover or specific areas as needed Access to the NCEC’s extensive information resources Access to atmospheric and marine chemical models The Service can help you manage the reputation of your company.

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 The Carechem Marine Service: What is it? With the Service you can obtain advice on: Chemical Hazards and Reactivity Behaviour and Environmental Fate of released chemicals Risk Analysis through Atmospheric and Marine Modelling First Aid Personal Protective Equipment Clean-up and Disposal Spill Response Timescale: We provide initial hazard advice within 10 minutes (it is usually much less). We aim to provide further advice based on modelling within one hour. Obtaining the right advice as soon as possible could allow you to resolve incidents faster and therefore to reduce costs.

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 Carechem Marine Information sources Chemdata, developed by NCEC: Searchable by product name or UN number and provides information on more than 45,000 substances and includes more than 139,000 product names and synonyms. Each document contains information on: identification, protection (PPE), hazards, precautions, Fire, Decontamination, First Aid, IMDG EMS, Marine environment information, physico-chemical properties. NCEC also maintains an extensive collection of MSDS, books and chemical databases.

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 Carechem Marine Models ChemSIS (Chemical Spill Information System), developed by NCEC, is based on extensive field trials and provides: Partitioning of the chemical in the water column (behaviour) Dissolved concentrations Total concentrations Trajectory of the spill The evaporation rate can be entered into an atmospheric model Total Concentrations Partitioning

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 Carechem Marine Models ALOHA, Atmospheric Model from the EPA/NOAA Provide estimates of the extent of hazardous atmospheres based on evaporation rate from ChemSIS Different levels of concerns can be set such as ERPG, IDLH, TEELs, AEGLs, Explosive Limits, Occupational Exposure Limits, Odour Threshold, etc…

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 Why Use Carechem Marine? Bulk Chemicals Pre-incident, i.e. a ship in difficulty but no release of chemicals: -Possibility of modelling various release scenarios allowing you to get your response options in place before the release occurs. During an incident -Helps ensure the safety of crew / public / salvers. -Provides understanding of the behaviour of the chemical allowing to choose the appropriate response options. Post-incident, modelling of various release scenarios to: -Prove to Maritime Authorities/Governments that your response options are adequate (e.g. controlled release versus re-flotation or pumping of cargo). Using the Service allow your staff to focus on dealing with the incident rather than spending valuable time searching for information or running models.

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 Why Use Carechem Marine? Containerized / Packaged Dangerous Goods Pre-incident: -You can use the Service for the identification of products and their hazards allowing to segregate or refuse cargo. During an incident: -Provides advice on the hazards, first-aid, protection, precautions and clean-up options of spill on or off the ship. -Helps protect the safety of the crew and public -Helps to reduce the time necessary to resolve the incident and thus the cost of the incident. The Service for Containerized / Packaged Dangerous Goods includes the use of the Atmospheric Model. In addition, the use of the ChemSIS Model can be offered at an hourly rate, should you ever need it.

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 Calls Taken By Carechem Marine Bulk Chemicals Ship drifting towards coastline with cargo of vinyl acetate -Immediate risk identification (Chemdata, MSDS): possible explosive gas cloud, marine pollution potential. -Risk Analysis: modelling of several scenarios (including catastrophic rupture, slow release from puncture) showed that evaporation would form explosive vapour cloud that could impact nearby village, dissolved concentrations would be low, low environmental impact expected. Chemical tanker sunk in South-East Asia. -We carried out extensive modelling helping our customer to prove to the local Government that a controlled release of the cargo would have no impact on the public or the environment and was safer than trying to re-float the tanker as requested. Chemical tanker sunk in the English Channel. -We carried out modelling of the release of the various chemicals, including contents of slop tanks, to assess the fate and consequences of spills. Made recommendation on exclusion zones around the wreck based on water/airborne concentrations.

Copyright Ricardo-AEA November 2012 Calls Taken By Carechem Marine Containerized / Packaged Goods Spill of unknown solid found in hold. -Help in trying to identify substance from previous cargo contained in hold. -Advice on personal protection and clean-up methods. Crew discovered smell on deck while at sea. -Identification of the most likely container based on manifest. -Provided advice on personal protection to investigate smell and provided advice on how to deal with a spillage of the substance. Following severe weather, water ingress in containers containing water- reactive substance. -Identification of the hazards of the substance and of the products of reaction. -Provided advice on personal protection and spillage clean-up.
