Development of the Internet  December 1969  Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) went online and connected 4 major American universities, which provided a link in case a military attack that destroyed communication systems  1973  Electronic mail introduced by a scientist in Cambridge, Massachusetts  1976  Jimmy Carter and his running mate use to plan campaign events

Development of the Internet (Continued)  1982  The term “Internet” is used for the first time*  1985  America Online debuts , electronic bulletin boards, news and other information*  1989  Dial up internet  Tim Berners- Lee dubs “The World Wide Web”

Societal Impact  Children born after 1985 don’t remember a life without cellphones, computer and the internet  Some studies show that too much screen time can be damaging to a child’s physical health (such as obesity) and cognitive development  Children under the age of 5 shouldn’t need play with anything “electronic”  Impairs creativity
