Why is a Computer So Powerful?

A computer is an electronic machine that accepts data, stores and processes data into information. The computer is able to work because there are instructions in its memory directing it. The parts of the computer that you can see and touch, such as the keyboard, monitor and the mouse are called hardware. The instructions that direct the computer are called software or computer program. Data which is raw facts that you the user enter into the computer is called input. This includes; words, numbers, sound and pictures. When the data is entered into the computer, the computer processes the data to produce information which is output. For example, you enter 2+2 into the computer as data, the computer processes it and the result is 4 which is information. Back

 What is an input device? Hardware used to enter data and instructions 5 Back

 What is an output device? Hardware that conveys information to a user Back

 What is the system unit? Box-like case containing electronic components used to process data 7 Back

8  What are two main components on the motherboard? Central Processing Unit (CPU) Also called a processor Carries out instructions that tell computer what to do Memory Temporary holding place for data and instructions Back

 What is storage? Holds data, instructions, and information for future use Storage media Physical material on which data, instructions, and information are stored Storage media Physical material on which data, instructions, and information are stored Storage device Records and retrieves items to and from a storage medium Storage device Records and retrieves items to and from a storage medium Back

 What is a floppy disk? Thin, circular, flexible disk enclosed in rigid plastic shell A Zip disk looks similar but has much greater storage capability (=170 floppy disk) Back

 11  What is a hard disk? Provides much greater storage capacity than a floppy disk or Zip disk Housed inside the system unit Back

What is a compact disc? Flat, round, portable metal disc  CD-ROM  CD-RW Capacity: 673~768 MB  DVD-ROM  DVD+RW Capacity:4.7 ~ 17.1 GB Back
