Manipulative Skills Underhand Throw BY JOVANI MENDEZ EDSC 304

Objectives for Today  Understand how physical activity is decreasing and affecting people.  Understand Critical elements of underhand throwing  Understand how underhand throwing can help students participate in a variety of environments.  Create your own game that involves underhand throwing.

Lifetime Physical Activity Decreasing As children age into adolescents, adults, and older adults the level of physical activity decreases. Physical activity is important for everyone it helps lower the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, depression, etc. Physical Activity helps improve bone health, decrease levels of fat, self-esteem, confidence, etc.

Exercise Benefits 23 ½ hoursStay Active 30 minutes of physical activity is only 4% of your day. Exercise improves overall health and lowers the risk for diseases and other health problems. How much? How often? How intense? ?v=aUaInS6HIGo ?v=aUaInS6HIGo

Questions to consider?  What are the critical elements of underhand throwing?  Why are manipulative skills important?  How do manipulative skills contribute to healthy growth and development?  How do basic motor skills lead to lifetime physical activity?  How do they improved social interactions?

Critical Elements: Underhand Throw Face your target Step with your opposite foot towards the target (if throwing hand is right, step towards target with left) Flex your knee and get low to the ground! (May vary based on activity playing) Follow through (It may be high to the sky or low to the ground based on the game one is participating in)

Discussion  Now turn to your partner and discuss what are some activities that are lifetime physical activities.  Now based on your response narrow it down and discuss what lifetime physical activities that include underhand throwing.

Bowling Bowling is a lifetime physical activity that can be played by people from all ages. A game is made of 10 frames; each frame represents a turn for the bowler. If the player knocks down all pins with first roll it is a strike; If not, a second roll is attempted. If a bowler commits a foul, by stepping over line, it counts as a shot, and pins knocked down are re-spotted without counting.

Lawn Bowling Amateur sport played world wide by people from all ages. Played on a bowling green (can be played at the park) Equipment needed: 4 matched bowling balls The jack- a small white ball Object of the game is to roll your bowl as close as to the jack. The team that has nearest to the ‘jack’ scores one point and an additional for each bowl from the same team that is closer to the bowl.  15Wk&feature=player_embedded 15Wk&feature=player_embedded

Horseshoe Pitching Popular sport played in USA or Canada Tossing or throwing a horseshoe at a pin or peg. Game is for 2 to 4 players Each player stands at one stake and throws two horseshoes at the other stake A horseshoe enclosing stake is called a ringer and counts as 3 points. Informal games are played to 21

Create a Game  Students will work on a project in groups of 3 and create a game that includes underhand throwing or any skill previously learned.  All students must participate and be able to show a thorough understanding of the game.  Students will teach the game in class. (5 minutes maximum)  Include the following -Equipment, player roles, rules, environment, objective.  Create a diagram

Criteria to Consider  Safety 1 st is the most important factor when creating a game.  How many players can play at a time.  What are the game offensive and defensive strategies.  What are violations and rules that need to be followed.  What skills are being taught.  Think of a game that everyone will enjoy.  Have fun and work hard.
