Essays contain 3 main parts Introduction Body Conclusion

Essays And each of those parts contain parts Introduction Body Attention getter Introduction Explanation of purpose and credibility Thesis statement Transition Body Topic Sentences Evidence Thesis restatement Conclusion Explanation Summary of ideas Closure

Cohesive Essays clearly communicate ideas. transition smoothly from one idea to the next. show relationships between ideas. satisfy the audience.

Elements of Cohesive Essays Interesting titles Strong thesis statements Specific topic sentences Accurate transitions Effective integration of evidence Satisfying closures

Interesting Titles Do not! spark your reader’s interest. suggest the subject of the paper. spark your reader’s interest. Do not! title your paper something like “Essay 4” or “Personal Essay.” title your paper the same title as the work you’re writing about. write a complete sentence as your title. use the prompt as your title. title your paper something that has nothing to do with your topic.

Strong Thesis Statements A STRONG thesis statement is open to debate. Don’t make a claim that your audience already knows to be fact. is open to evidence. You must be able to gather and present evidence for and against your claim. is clearly stated. Your audience should never be confused about what your claim actually is. The thesis statement summarizes the contents of the paper. states an argument.

Specific Topic Sentences are usually the first sentence in a body paragraph. explain what the paragraph is going to be about. restate the argument. transition from the previous paragraph.

Accurate Transitions Transitions are used between paragraphs and within paragraphs. show how one idea is related to another idea. organize your essay.
