 Culture is the learned behavior of members of a given social group.  It provides useful guidelines for behavior.  For example: In Arab countries when greeting; men do not think “should I kiss her?”. No!!!. Culture provides information that helps us make meaningful distinctions about wright and wrong, good and bad, attractive and unattractive,…… 2

 The dominant culture or (mainstream) is that one seems to hold by the majority of people.  Culture can divide us but also can unite us!!!! All the citizens of one country (usually) of all colors, genders, intelligence and religion can communicate and respect each other. 3

Culture effect's can be negative as positive. Taking care of plantsThrowing food in garbage 4

 Reading every where (in a bus-stop)  Spitting is not allowed 5

6  Greeting in Japan

Communication & Culture  Creation and maintenance of a more or less common culture occurs through communication, including mass communication, communicating with friends, parents, religious leaders, teachers, politicians….. 7

The role of mass communication in transferring and uniting the culture: Mass communication can be a cultural storytellers.  This means it can emphasize values and beliefs reside in the stories it tells.  Then we use these stories not only to be entertained but to learn about the world around us, to understand the values, the way things work. 8

9 Mass communication as cultural forum.  Mass media can debate about our culture. The most powerful voices in the forum have the most power to shape our definitions and understandings.

Culture Shock  The definition of culture shock is the trauma you experience when you move into a culture different from your home culture.  A communication problem occurs as a result of the lack of understanding; the verbal and nonverbal communication of the new culture, it's customs and it's value systems are only a few of the problems. 10
