The world of english- speaking countries By Vika Vasiljeva, Form 7

A special kind of beauty exists which is born in language, of language, and for language. (Gaston Bachelard) Today, English is spoken in more parts of the world than any other language. English is considered one of the world’s richest languages. It has well over half a million words! If you speak English, you have plenty of people to talk to. People use the English language to communicate in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other countries. It is spoken in more parts of the world than any other language.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland The United Kingdom is the birthplace of the English language. Some people call it Britain. Others say Great Britain. Many people mistakenly call the whole country England. But its real name is a mouthful: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Facts About the United Kingdom: Capital – London Official language – English Population - 62,262,000 people Rank among countries in population - 21st Major cities - London, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow Area - 94,300 square miles (244,000 square kilometers) Rank among countries in area - 77th

Map of the United Kingdom The United Kingdom is a country made up of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. For centuries, it was ruled by kings and queens. The United Kingdom still has a monarchy, although today its power is mostly symbolic. There are many universities, colleges, libraries, museums and theatres in the country. The most famous universities are Cambridge University, Oxford University, Glasgow University.

The United States of America Officially, its name is the United States of America. But people often call it the United States, the USA, or America. Facts About the United States Capital - Washington, D.C. Population - 314,000,000 people Rank among countries in population - 3rd Major cities - New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia Area - 3,790,000 square miles 9,830,000 square kilometers Rank among countries in area - 3rd

Map of the United States The United States is the third largest country in area in the world, after Russia and Canada. It covers the width of North America between Canada and Mexico. America has fifty states and one federal District of Columbia where the capital of the country is situated. The United States is a democracy. The USA is a country of highly developed industry and agriculture. The main industrial centres are Chicago and Detroit, with their greatest automobile company “General Motors”. There are many farms with various agricultural products.

Canada Canada is the second largest country in the world. Only Russia has more land. Facts About Canada: Capital – Ottawa Official languages - English, French Population - 34,874,000 people Rank among countries in population - 35th Major cities - Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver Area - 3,860,000 square miles (9,980,000 square kilometers) Rank among countries in area - 2nd

Map of Canada For a country its size, Canada’s population is quite small. About the same number of people live in Canada as in the U.S. state of California. Today, Canada is made up of ten provinces and three northern territories. Canada is very rich in forest, minerals and fur- bearing animals. It holds the first place in the world in the amount of forests. It is rich in the following natural resources: non- ferrous metals, uranium, oil, natural gas, coal.

Australia Australia is often called “the land down under.” Do you know why? Look at a map or globe and you’ll see. Australia is far to the south, way down under almost everything else! Facts About Australia: Official name - Commonwealth of Australia Capital – Canberra Official language – English Population - 22,686,000 people Rank among countries in population - 51st Major cities - Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth Area - 2,970,000 square miles 7,680,000 square km Rank among countries in area - 6th

Map of Australia Australia lies between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Like an island, it is surrounded by water. But Australia is too large to be called an island. Instead, it is considered the world’s seventh and smallest continent. In fact, Australia is the only country that takes up an entire continent. Australia is famous for its many unusual animals. Even the names of the animals in Australia are strange. Can you imagine seeing a wallaby, wombat, quokka, bandicoot, dingo, or Tasmanian devil?

New Zealand What is the name of the country which has volcanoes and rivers of ice, deer and sea-elephants? It is New Zealand, called the Land of the Long White Cloud by the Maoris. Facts about New Zealand: Official name – New Zealand Capital – Wellington Official language – English, Maori Population - 4,430,400 people Rank among countries in population – 122nd Major cities - Auckland, Christ church and Wellington Area - 103,483 square miles 268,021 square km Rank among countries in area - 75th

Map of New Zealand New Zealand is an island country. It is made up of three islands: the North and South Islands and Steward Island, a small land mass just to the south of (the South Island). The Maoris, a Polynesian people, are the aborigines of New Zealand. New Zealand is famous for its fishing, snow sports, mountaineering, sailing and hiking.

Conclusion Why is English such an important international language? English, which is often referred to as 'the language of the planet' is spoken by more than 750 million people worldwide. We also use English in many places. For example, it is used in the international business, computer language, movies, and so on. So if we want to visit these beautiful, amazing countries and find new friends we should learn English well.
