o New bath rooms o Completed but lots of minor problems: o Leaks: Holes in new tiled walls to find cause o Ventilation: Smelling from new toilets o Cellars: o Refurbishment of SS-14 for pool storage: Done o SS-13: o Storage area for LHC spare parts: Done o Technical installations for cooling system: “Done” o Renovation of floors (with asbestos): Partially done o Renovation of electrical installations: Planned o Flooding problems: Not solved o Technical investigations ongoing o Multiple causes o Painting and renovation of wooden walls on hold because of flooding problems o Installation of flooding detection/alarm to firebrigade o Cellar unusable until real solution to flooding problem found. o Affected users: PH-ESE storage and labs, LHCb, CLOUD, DT slide 4
o : Auditorium refurbishment o Painting: Done o New ceiling with new lights: Done o New ventilation system (with aircond.): To be finalized o Old system removed o Airconducts in room itself done o New ventilation/aircond. system be installed (before summer 2014) o Awaiting video conferencing system finalization o New ceiling in corridor to be installed. o Roof of Bat 14 o In bad state and this seems known since long time o Leaks o Repairs of bad quality o Major repair required o May require scaffolding around whole building !. o Refurbishment should have been done when scaffolding installed for window replacement !. ESE group meeting slide 5
o Stores/blinds: o In general bad state: Every storm destroys a few o With danger of somebody getting injured ! o Continuous localized repairs made o General refurbishment required o Should have been done when installing new windows ~5years ago slide 6
Summary o Most of our refurbishment work finalized o Remaining: o Flooding in cellar -> Seriously affects works and our use of cellar o Roof of bat. 14, o Finalize auditorium o Refurbish Stores/blinds o Small things to finalize: Ceilings, toilet problems, etc. o Comments o Work not of “Swiss quality”: Always take cheapest offer ! o Work has taken a loooong time to finish. o We should have made a global refurbishment of whole building o Very difficult/impossible when people still living/working in building o Not enough money o Interface between “players” not always clear: o Client (us) o PH-AGS-SI o GS and the many different parts of GS o Companies o Who follows up on what ? o Memory in system seems limited: Known problems forgotten o Lots of knowledge seems to have disappeared when “old generation” has retired from GS o Significant delays when frame-contracts change o Clearly not enough money for CERN infrastructure refurbishment o Many thanks to: Marie-Noel, Jacques, Bart and Juny slide 7

Reminder o Reasons for relocation (and making one group) o Get people closer together to enable good daily exchange of experience/expertise/ideas in the electronics domain related to all the different projects we are doing in a large variety of domains (micro-electronics to standard instrumentation) o Assure appropriate lab infrastructure for all our different activates: Clean room – IC testing - opto – general labs – mini mechanical workshop – storage – etc.. o But also keep in mind: o Maintain close/regular contacts with our clients/project partners (experiments) ESE group meeting slide 9
Offices o General principle o Long term staff gets individual office to the extent possible. o Large rooms used for multiple students/visitors/fellows/etc. o Air-conditioning o CERN does not any more “allow” to have air-conditioning of individual offices unless for specific reasons. o Exceptions in ESE: o Top floor that can get very hot in summer o 5 th floor installed before new “CERN rule” on this. o Offices on south corner getting exceedingly hot in summer because of bad general thermal insulation of our old building. o Comment: Air-conditioning in labs not intended to cool offices via corridor keeping all doors open. o All offices have been painted and should be in good shape. o Remaining: o New lightning o Radiator thermostats o ? Labs/workshops o All new labs have been refurbished with appropriate flexible electrical installations (power rails at ceiling) and air-conditioning (some not yet connected to global cooling system). o Each lab is run by a lab responsible that takes care of general state of lab. All other users of labs must agree with this “lab master” on how and when to use the lab. o To prevent complete anarchy seen in some labs in the past. o Same principle applies to all our major instruments: ese/group_internal/instruments/ESE_Inventory.htm ese/group_internal/instruments/ESE_Inventory.htm o Electronic keys (not yet on all labs in 5/6 th. floor) o Default: People in section have access o Additional access can easily be added (Evelyne) o Electronic keys keeps a log of who have had access when (big brother watching you, that we will hopefully never use) o Unexpected “feature”: Cards must be refreshed once per month via dedicated terminal in building entrance (or on terminal in Evelyne’s office) o Some labs will have particular access restrictions for safety reasons: o Radioactive sources, X-ray machines, Laser labs, Mechanical workshop. Meeting/training/terminal o : Small meeting room o Booking via Indico (by group members) o Projector, Computer, Camera, Microphone, Phone: Equipped for EVO and phone conference. o Will soon get electronic key o : Training/Termial/Meeting/ME library,, room o Booking via Indico (by group members) o Projector o Electronic key ESE group meeting slide 16
Common facilities Large meeting room: o Old and worn out o Seats keeps people awake o Refurbishment in planning. o Painting, projector o Air-conditioning, heating, seats ? o Public meeting room with booking via Indico Coffee Paradise o Central point for many informal discussions. o Only kept alive if certain turnaround (should be OK now) ESE group meeting slide 17
Planned work (2011) o Finalize refurbishment of cellar of 13: o Component storage o Nitrogen protected storage (bare dies, wafers and delicate components) o 1 -2 labs with infrequently used equipment (Egun, climatic chambers, etc.) o Renovation of sanitary installations o Refurbishment of building entrance o Additional parking places when removing old barracks o “Controlled” car access to back yard o Refurbishment of global chilled water distribution in building. New cooling plant and connection of remaining cooling units in our labs. o New ceilings and painting of corridors in 14. o Painting of stair cases o Other: o Renovate small elevator (just replace “wooden” panels) o Noisy escape stairs o ? ESE group meeting slide 18
Entrance refurbishment o Entrance very visible from CERN main road o General refreshment strongly needed o Should be more welcoming. o Get rid of bicycle mess in front o Allow smokers to have a decent place outside with appropriate ash trays. o Allow appropriate use of coffee automates with minimal mess generated from this. o Use available space to have small permanent exposition of electronics/detectors for HEP. o Easy to maintain and keep clean o An initial study has been done by an architect. o Asbestos removal in floor glue: 16k (CERN policy to do this now) o Internal refurbishment: 60k (of which~ 10k for vitrine) o External + bicyles + stair case + water fountain + information panel: ? o WHO PAYS: GS, PH, ESE, ? Conclusions o I think we are now very well installed and have all required infrastructure available. o There will still be major work to do this year: o Entrance, Sanitary, Chilled water, Corridors, Stair case, Meeting room, Cellar of bat 13. o I hope financial constraints (or asbestos problems) will not delay this work. o Thanks to you all to have made this possible o PH and GS management (funding and support) o PH-SMI: Jean-Loup, Marie-Noelle, Jacques, Sebastian. o GS: Christophe Martel, Barthelemy Gossuin o ESE: Patrick Petit o All of you who have made this relocation smoothly and efficiently. o When all finalized, I can propose that we organize an open day for visits by our colleagues and collaborators at CERN. o Please let me know of ideas/requests for further improvements. o I think we are now very well installed, even though some of you may have been dreaming about this: ESE group meeting slide 24
