DIGESTIVE SYSTEM By: Jamie Casselman
What is the digestive system? A complex group of organs and glands that process the food we eat
It mechanically and chemically breakdowns food into smaller molecules which can be absorbed into the blood stream Excretes waste materials your body can’t use
1. Ingestion 2. Digestion 3. Absorption 4. Elimination
Process of putting food or drink into your mouth
Mechanical: Begins in the mouth with the teeth and tongue chewing food into pieces you can swallow Chemical: Salivary glands produce enzymes (amylase), which breaks down complex carbohydrates to simple ones
Swallow Peristalsis
Small intestine: occurs in the last five meters of called the jejunum and ileum villi increase the rate of absorption of nutrients Large intestine: Accepts what the small intestine doesn’t absorb Absorbs more water and concentrates the wastes
Undigested materials (feces) from the large intestine pass into the rectum and are eliminated through the anus
