DRESSED TO LEARN June 7, 2012

 Safe, secure, and focused learning environment.  Sense of school identity and an atmosphere of belonging.  Increases school spirit, respect, and good citizenship.  Peer pressure and jealousy over clothing will decrease.  Encourages individual self-expression in creative ways other than through clothes - via arts, music, sports, personality, and academic achievement

 Mornings become easier for parents - promotes efficiency, organization, and neatness.  Provides a significant financial savings for families as compared to the prices of trendy, name brand clothing.

 A polo shirt (long or short-sleeve) each day in one of the following colors: hunter green, pale yellow, or white.  Khaki or navy pants, jumpers, shorts or skirts for girls (No capri, cargo, or jean pants); Khaki or navy pants or shorts for boys.

 Sneakers are preferred footwear, but are required for Physical Education days.  Navy sweatpants with no writing and a plain shirt in hunter green, pale yellow, or white, will be worn on Physical Education days only.  A sweater in hunter green, pale yellow, or white may be worn during the cold weather.  Additional Garfield School Apparel such as sweatshirts, sweatpants and t-shirts with the school logo will be available to order.

 Uniforms can be purchased from the following stores:  Wal-Mart  Target  JC Penny  K-Mart  Kohl’s  Sears  Old Navy  Burlington Coat Factory  Children’s Place  Sparks (Malden) Prices vary between stores; however, Wal-Mart seems to be priced the most reasonably: Tops- $24.00 for a 4 pack of polo shirts Bottoms- $28.00 for a 2 pack of pants

 The first day of school in Fall 2012, students must be dressed in their complete uniform.  Positive reinforcement to ensure compliance.  Disciplinary actions will only be taken when positive measures and support fail to assure compliance.  No student will be considered non-compliant for religious, cultural, or health reasons.

 First occurrence - a call will be made to parent/guardian to bring in clothes. A letter will be sent reinforcing the uniform policy.  Second occurrence – a call home for clothes with a reminder that student must adhere to policy.  Third occurrence – If non-compliance is deemed to be purposeful and/or defiant, parent will be notified and student will receive detention.
