NIH K-08 Application – PA Overall goal: The primary purpose of the NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Awards (K08) program is to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program represents the continuation of a long-standing NIH program that provides support and “protected time” to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in the fields of biomedical and behavioral research, including translational research. Individuals with a clinical doctoral degree interested in pursuing a career in patient-oriented research should refer to the NIH Mentored Patient- Oriented Research Career Development Award (Parent K23). Duration: Up to 5 years Awards: -Salaries and fringe (based on full-time, 12-months staff appointment; must devote at least 75% FTE) -Research development support (tuition/fees, research expenses; travel to research meetings/trainings; statistical services) -Mentors do not receive any salary compensation

NIH K-08 Application – PA Program Director/Principle Investigator (PD/PI): Any candidate with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) is invited to work with his/her mentor and organization to develop an application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Multiple Principal Investigators are not allowed. By the time of award, the individual must be a citizen or a non-citizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Permanent Resident Card USCIS Form I-551, or other legal verification of such status). Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible. Former PD/PIs on NIH research project (R01), program project (P01), center grants, FIRST Awards (R29), sub-projects of program project (P01) or center grants, other career development awards (K–awards), or the equivalent are not eligible. Former principal investigators of an NIH Small Grant (R03), Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21), Dissertation Awards (R36), or SBIR/STTR (R41, R42, R43, R44) remain eligible. Candidates for this award must have a clinical doctoral degree. Such degrees include but are not limited to the M.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., O.D., D.C., Pharm.D., N.D. (Doctor of Naturopathy), D.V.M. Individuals with the Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in clinical disciplines such as clinical psychology, nursing, clinical genetics, speech-language pathology, audiology or rehabilitation are also eligible. Individuals holding the Ph.D. in a non-clinical discipline who are certified to perform clinical duties should contact the appropriate Institute concerning their eligibility for a K08 award.

NIH K-08 Application – PA Mentor(s) must: Supervise the proposed career development and research experience. Be an active investigator in the area of the proposed research and be committed both to the career development of the candidate and to the direct supervision of the candidate’s research. Candidates are encouraged to identify more than one mentor, i.e., a mentoring team, if this is deemed advantageous for providing expert advice in all aspects of the research career development program. Document the availability of sufficient research support and facilities for high-quality research. Have a successful track record of mentoring. In such cases, one individual must be identified as the principal mentor who will coordinate the candidate’s research. The candidate must work with the mentor(s) in preparing the application. Describe the career development plan for the candidate (coordinated with the candidate’s research strategy). The mentor and any co-mentors are also expected to provide an assessment of the candidate’s qualifications and potential for a research career. The research environment and the availability and quality of needed research facilities and research resources (e.g., equipment, laboratory space, computer time, available research support, etc.) must also be described. The description should include items such as classes, seminars, and opportunities for interaction with other groups and scientists. Training in career skills, e.g. grant-writing and making effective presentations, is strongly encouraged.

Institute- and Center-Specific Awards under K-08 NCI: NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award to Promote Diversity ( K08) (PAR ) (Expires January 8, 2011) – To promote career development of racially and ethnically diverse individuals who are underrepresented in health-related science and for those who are committed to a career in cancer health disparities, biomedical, behavioral or translational cancer research. NIA: Paul B. Beeson Clinical Scientist Development Award in Aging (K08) (RFA-AG ) (Expires October 27, 2011) – To encourage and assist the development of future leaders in the field of aging by supporting clinically trained (primarily physician) faculty members early in their careers to gain additional research training and to establish independent programs in aging research. NIAMS: Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award in Muscular Dystrophy Research (K08) (PA ) (Expires November 13, 2013) – NIAMS and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) are interested in supporting additional career development and mentoring opportunities in muscular dystrophy research. NIAMS and NICHD will provide career development awards to promising clinically trained applicants with the potential to become productive, independent investigators in basic, translational, and clinical research on the muscular dystrophies. This FOA is issued in recognition of the urgent need for highly skilled, interactive investigators who are able to integrate various disciplines and levels of expertise to successfully address the increasing challenges in the current research environment of the muscular dystrophies. This FOA calls for applications for mentored career development awards for clinical scientist engaged in laboratory research. It is expected that this career development program will increase the number of investigators in basic, translational, and clinical research on muscular dystrophy, and will also increase the quality of their research and training. Diseases for this program announcement include, but are not limited to, Duchenne, myotonic, facioscapulohumeral, and congenital muscular dystrophies.
