Instructional Technology Final Project: Cause and Effect Movie Maker Activity Claire DeRose Towson University
Learning Problem HCPS Language Arts Curriculum is dry Anthology use does not motivate students
Solution: Use of novels! – Get invested in characters, plot, and conflict Creative activities that strengthen student’s knowledge of literary elements and reading strategies while engaging them in language arts material.
Teaching Cause and Effect with Windows Movie Maker Students will learn what cause and effect is and how to find it in a story by creating a movie that has five cause and effect scenes from a class novel, Among the Hidden. Q/mQqdflgt21o/s1600/among-the-hidden.jpg
Learning Environment Audience: 7 th grade students at Fallston Middle School Learning styles: – Visual (movie) – Verbal (talking with group, talking in movie) – Interpersonal (group work) – Kinesthetic (acting out scenes) Teaching styles: – TPACK Teaching via group project Using multiple forms of technology Using ILA curriculum content – Kids are engaged – Kids have choice Technology Integration: Windows Movie Maker Theories: – Constructivist viewpoint – “Learners actively constructing their own knowledge with teachers being coaches, facilitators” (Alessi, S.& Trollip.S., 2001).
Instructional Design: ADDIE
ADDIE : Analysis Learners: 7 th grade Language Arts students Characteristics: low to average ability – Unmotivated Student needs: chunking, review of Windows Movie Maker Constraints: computer lab availability
Analysis Timeline DayActivityAssessment 1 PowerPoint on Cause and Effect; students take notes. Students get into groups of four (teacher selected in advance). Students work in groups to make a list of cause and effect events in Among the Hidden. Exit Slip: What is one cause and effect in Among the Hidden? 2 Students narrow cause and effect list to the five most significant events in the story. Students start to plan how the five events will be displayed in scenes for their movie (characters, dialogue, setting, etc.) Compare with class what five scenes were picked and why. 3Students use flip cams to record five scenes. Collect checklist for how many scenes each group recorded. 4 Students use flip cams to record five scenes. Students will complete a movie maker questionnaire to gage how many are familiar with the program. Collect movie maker questionnaire. 5 Computer lab technician and teacher will give a tutorial on how to use Windows Movie Maker. A step by step guide will also be handed out. Students will upload scenes into Windows Movie Maker and begin to create their movie in the computer lab. Check students’ progress with movie by looking at them on the classes shared drive. Make notes to talk to specific groups if needed. 6Students will finish creating their movie in the computer lab. Check students’ progress with movie by looking at them on the classes shared drive. Make notes to talk to specific groups if needed. 7Groups will introduce their movie and then show it. Classmates will evaluate each other’s movies using the project rubric. Collect student rubrics. Collect project survey. Grade each group’s movie using rubric.
ADDIE: Design Learning objectives: Students will: – define cause and effect – analyze Among the Hidden to find cause and effect examples – evaluate cause and effect examples to determine significant events – plan cause and effect scenes to put in their movie – create a movie to display five significant cause and effect events in Among the Hidden – share their movies with the class and evaluate peers’ movies. Assessments: – Exit slip – Checklists – Teacher monitoring – Rubric for peer review and teacher grade Content: – Cause and effect in Among the Hidden Media Used: – PowerPoint – Flip Cam – Windows Movie Maker
ADDIE: Development Created a PowerPoint to explain cause and effect Created a rubric to explain how the project would be graded Created an example movie
ADDIE: Implementation Sign out Flip Cams Reserve computer lab Re-familiarize with Windows Media Maker Go over basics of Windows Media Maker with students first day of computer lab to review
ADDIE: Evaluation Formative Exit slip: What is one cause and effect in Among the Hidden? Brief class discussion: Compare with class what five scenes were picked and why.
