Learning Targets “I Can…” Create a food web to show energy transfer in a given set of organisms in an ecosystem Place a given set of organisms on a trophic pyramid Identify each level of a trophic pyramid
Creating A Food Web
“Energy Flow in the Coral Reef” Write the name of the following organisms on your paper: Algae in Coral Polyp Plankton Spiny Blenny Parrot Fish Sea Cucumber Small Herbivorous Fish Ruffled Sea Slug Long Spine Sea Urchin Great Barricuda Moray Eel Yellow Tail Snapper
Learning Targets “I Can…” Define “biological magnification.” Simulate biological magnification to show how organisms at the top of the trophic pyramid are most negatively affected by toxins, using DDT as the example.
Biological Magnification Not only can energy be transferred up the trophic pyramid, but chemicals can be moved up the trophic pyramid as well. If these chemicals are poisonous, their effects are most harmful to those organisms at the top of the trophic pyramid; this is called biological magnification. DDT is a pesticide whose effect demonstrate biological magnification.
THE DAY THEY PARACHUTED CATS INTO BORNEO This is an activity that demonstrates the importance of the connections among the different components (both abiotic and biotic) in an ecosystem. It also illustrates how difficult it is for humans to identify all these components and their relationships. Work in your group and try to arrange the following events in chronological order. When you think you have the correct sequence, ask me for the answer- By the way, this is based on a real situation.
