Rainforest Animals

Emergent Layer This layer is made up of a few tall trees. They peek out from the layer below. Only animals that fly or climb can get up here. The blue morpho butterfly and the Macaws fly over the trees, looking for prey. Sometimes an iguana warms its body in the sun.

Canopy Layer This is the “roof” of the rainforest. It is made up of the tops of trees. More fruits and nuts grow here than in any of the other layers. Most of the rain-forest animals are here too. For instance, you can find Toucans perched on a tree or Lemurs climbing through the trees.

Understory This layer is made up of branches and trunks of trees. Green vines hang down from above. Woody vines climb up from the forest floor. Squirrel monkeys rest on tree trunks while the emerald tree boas hook on.

Forest Floor This layer is dark and hot. That’s because the trees above block the sunlight and wind. The air is moist and misty. Insects are everywhere! Snakes slither along the muddy floor and up the trees. You will find poison dart frogs in this layer, as well as, anacondas slithering by.

Lemurs live in the rainforest. They are found in the Canopy layer.

Red eyed tree frogs live in the rainforest. We are found in the forest floor layer.

Macaws live in the rainforest. Macaw’s are found in the emergent layer.

Toucans live in the rainforest. I can be found in the canopy layer.

Squirrel Monkeys live in the rainforest. Squirrel Monkeys swing from the trees located in the understory layer.

Emerald tree boas live in the rainforest. I slither through the canopy layer.

Blue morpho butterflies live in the rainforest. I fly through the emergent layer.

Poison dart frogs live in the rainforest. I croak in the forest floor layer.

Quetzals live in the rainforest. I soar through the upper canopy layer.

Anacondas live in the rainforest. I can be found on the forest floor and in the water.

Sloths live in the rainforest. I move slowly through the canopy layer.

Have we been discussing the layers and what animals make up the layers of the rainforest? Are we looking at a picture of the understory layer and the forest floor? What animals can you find here?

Is this a picture of the Emergent and Canopy layers of the Rainforest? What animals can we find here?
