YEAR ONE MATHMATICS Practical Maths at Home

Why do maths at home? Children learn that maths is used in everyday life Being comfortable allows for deep-level thinking Children enjoy learning from parents and brothers and sisters It doesn’t feel like “work”!

How many stairs you have. Number Practise Challenge children to investigate and write… How many stairs you have. How many windows? How many kitchen cupboards?

= 50 + 5 Number Partitioning What does the 2 in 26 mean? …20! So, 26 = 20 + 6 …or 2 tens and 6 units Spot numbers around the house – help your child to partition them… = 50 + 5 (or 5 tens and 5 units)

Number Partitioning If your child is ready and happy to, get them to write down their partitioning in different ways. Then try numbers over 100, so… 157 = 100 + 50 + 7 234 = 200 + 30 + 4 59 or 59 = 50 + 9 9 50

(This shows them how useful maths really is) How many minutes until my TV programme starts? How many sausages do I need to cook for everyone in the house?

Number Problems You could also you child to do tally charts for sandwich choices for picnics, or everyone’s favourite cereals to help with the weekly shop.

Halving & Quartering When cutting your pizzas up – talk about whether you have cut it in half or even quarters. How many halves or quarters are there?

Weights & Measures Bake! Make sure you read all numbers together and talk about the units… g = grams (for weight) ml = millilitres (for volume) Look at the scales, ask… “Do we need more or less?”
