What’s All the Buzz About Singapore Math? Using Number Bonds to Strengthen Your 1 st Graders’ Number Sense

this is what can happen. If number sense isn’t there…

 Effective as a stand-alone curriculum or as a supplement to your current math series  Intervention for struggling math students  Enrichment for students needing acceleration  Focuses on “Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract”  More than one way to solve a problem What is Singapore Math?

Help students:  Understand part-whole relationships  Compose and decompose numbers  See inverse relationships  Develop algebraic thinking  Master addition & subtraction bonds (facts) through 10 (which is an anchor number)  Build relational understanding, which is foundational for building mental math skills Number Bonds

Common Core Connections 1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions (e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem). 1.OA.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

Common Core Connections 1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., = = = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding by creating the known equivalent = = 13). 1.OA.8 Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = _ – 3, = _.

Introducing Number Bonds with Manipulatives

Use “Story of 4” Instead of “Fact Families”…

“If I only teach kids to count with blocks, they’ll think counting is always associated with blocks.” ~Char Forsten

Ten Frames = ___

Strong number sense now, will help your 1 st graders later… Let’s follow the journey of a number bond. Begin with the End in Mind!

Math Talk “Have you seen any good math lately?” “How is this like what we just did?” “Is that true? Who can prove it?” “How many? What’s the value?”

Take-aways for your classroom  Your turn!  What strategies do you use that you can share?  What strategies will you take away that you can use?
