Presentation transcript:

What is Juvenile Diabetes?  Type 1 diabetes is referred to as Juvenile Diabetes.  Most commonly type 1 diabetes are diagnosed from infancy to late 30’s.  In this type of diabetes the person’s pancreas produces little or no insulin.  Their own body’s defense system attacks and destroys the insulin cells in the pancreas. Juvenile diabetes n. Disease found in children brought on by eating too much candy. It can be cured by injections of insulin. And will be cured in about five years of any given time.

Check your number: Insulin shots every meal: Some kids can use an insulin pump. Age Doctor/Parent has to agree

As you can imagine diet is very important to children with diabetes. They really have to watch what they eat and count carbohydrates. Because carbohydrates turn to sugars.

1.The difference between High blood sugar /low blood sugar and what to do. What to expect with High blood sugar : the child maybe sleepy, in lala land and often very thirsty and need to go to the bathroom a lot. High blood sugar is treated by giving more insulin. What to expect with low blood sugar : the child will act sleepy and are often hungry and shaky. Low blood sugar should be treated immediately! Give the child simple sugars such as glucose tablets, fruit juice or regular soda. 3. Teacher should also know that kids with diabetes don’t want to be different. 4. Teachers should NEVER deny a child with diabetes request for water or a blood sugar test.

Get the insight! “I know when people ask me if I’m OK or if I’m allowed to eat something, they’re being nice, but it gets on your nerves after a while.” – Kayla, 15* “When I was younger, I hated Halloween because people would give me an apple and they would give my brother candy bars.” – Karey, 21* "I used to get angry sometimes and think that it‘s not fair. Then I just got used to having to manage diabetes and I just get on with my life." - Tom ** "We had to give a talk to the class so I talked about diabetes and how I had to manage it. Some of the kids were amazed and some said that it was really cool that I could do the testing and stuff by myself." - Ty ** *Growing Up with Diabetes **
