Experience AHS  Event held on March 10, 2012 to showcase the many aspects of the college of Applied Health Science.  Our department, Speech and Hearing Science, gave tours of the building, clinics and research labs for prospective students.  Our academic advisor, Kathi Ritten, asked the three of us to create a picture slideshow to highlight certain aspects of our program.

Our Chosen Project  We chose this project as a way to give back to our department.  We wanted to show prospective students the many opportunities SHS has to offer.  We created a Powerpoint that included pictures of important campus buildings, SHS classes, research labs and opportunities, and clubs/organizations.  The Powerpoint gave students an inside look at the Speech- Language-Pathology and Audiology Clinics.  Also included potential employment settings as an SLP or audiologist and helpful tips to succeed in school  We were present at the event and to answer any questions from incoming students and share our experiences with them.

Networking…  One of the things we worked on was taking pictures of research labs.  This gave us the opportunity to network with professors in the department as well as other faculty members and clinical advisors.  We learned a great amount of information about the type of research being done in our field as well as some terminology that is frequently used.  Some of us have Speech-Language Pathology concentrations and some Audiology. We personally gained insight through our differing perspectives.

Problems  The due date approached quickly…  may not have been the best mode of communication between all the group members.  More RSO’s should have been contacted to get more pictures of their organizations.  Interesting classes should have been highlighted more in the slideshow as well as more faculty members.

6 Next Steps  -Add more to our presentation  -Provide a handout highlighting our presentation and giving students something to keep  -Encourage other students and staff members to be involved in “Experience AHS” in the future

Wrap Up  We learned a lot about our field by doing this project.  We also learned how easy it is to talk to professors.  In future years, we can have students update/create a slideshow as the department changes over time. This can include adding more RSO’s and interesting classes to the presentation.  We think experience AHS was a success this year and we should get more students involved to make it even better next year!
