Web 2.0 Technologies for Online & Hybrid Teaching WORLDS COLLIDE Linda W. Friedman Associate Dean, Zicklin School of Business Professor of Statistics & Computer Information Systems March 25, 2011 The 14th Annual Baruch College Teaching with Technology Conference

Web 2.0 for Online & Hybrid Teaching ABSTRACT: Distance education models have evolved quite a bit from the 19th century’s ‘correspondence courses’ – just in time to collide with 21st century pedagogies in which communication, interaction, student engagement, active learning, and assessment are of critical importance. The term Web 2.0 encompasses a wide variety of Web- related communication technologies, such as blogs, wikis, online social networking, virtual worlds and other social media forms. These technologies are versatile, user-friendly, and exactly what today’s students are involved with outside of class. This session explores the use of Web 2.0 technologies in developing class materials for online and hybrid classes. March 25, 2011 The 14th Annual Baruch College Teaching with Technology Conference 2

What is online learning? The best of online, like the best of FTF learning, is active learning. Rather than being passive recipients of transmitted knowledge, students are active participants in the learning process. They are engaged. Students – not only the instructor – help to create the learning environment. March 25, 2011 The 14th Annual Baruch College Teaching with Technology Conference 3

What is online learning? Today, we know that teaching is all about communication. Not one-way communication – boring lectures – but many- to-many communication – a learning environment. Ideally, we would like students to learn as much from each other as they do from us. We manage the learning activities and facilitate learning. March 25, 2011 The 14th Annual Baruch College Teaching with Technology Conference 4

What is online learning? Online learning is still communication – on a technology platform. This can be a Bb Discussion Forum; a classful of student blogs; a class wiki project; a twitter discussion; online social networking; video presentations on YouTube; or even a virtual world like SecondLife. March 25, 2011 The 14th Annual Baruch College Teaching with Technology Conference 5

Social Media Technologies What is Web 2.0? Blogs, wikis, facebook. What was Web 1.0? What was Web 1.0? Like old media – newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, and static web pages – Web 1.0 is all about controlling communication. Information is transmitted in only one direction, from the producer to the audience. March 25, 2011 The 14th Annual Baruch College Teaching with Technology Conference 6

Social Media Technologies Web 2.0 is all about human interaction – conversations in cyberspace. This new media, rather than replacing the old media, converges with it. Telephones are cameras, TVs are merging with the Internet, we have an infotainment industry. Libraries are no longer merely structures where books are kept – they help us with information navigation. March 25, 2011 The 14th Annual Baruch College Teaching with Technology Conference 7
