My Definition of Discrimination  When you treat people unfairly because of their race, of their sex, of their sexuality, of where they come from, of their age, of their weight.  Probably more types

Examples of Discrimination General ExamplesExamples in my Life  Bullying-making fun of someone because of their weight  Parents thinking teenagers can’t be right because they are younger  People thinking I don’t have papers because I am Mexican  People thinking I live in East Palo Alto because sometimes I wear the same clothes

Oscar Grant- ( )  Websites I used  Read many articles about Oscar Grant  Read the Wikipedia about the BART shooting  wiki/BART_Police_shoot ing_of_Oscar_Grant#Os car_Grant_III wiki/BART_Police_shoot ing_of_Oscar_Grant#Os car_Grant_III  Went to the Oscar Grant Foundation Website  oundation.com/ oundation.com/  Watched the clip of his death on youtube  m/watch?v=bmJukcFzE X4

Why Oscar Grant? AnswerMovie- “Fruitvale Station”  Lived in Oakland (Near East Palo Alto)  East Palo Alto is similar to Oakland  There is a movie about Oscar Grant

Oscar Grant’s Story  African American  New Year’s Eve- 2:15- Oakland, California  Bart Station (Train Station)  Might have been a fight at Station (reports)  Officer Mehserle shot Grant (claimed he meant to tase him)  Grant was unarmed (died later)  Many protests since  Mehserle was arrested

Why? What type discrimination occur? Why did the type of discrimination occur?  Race discrimination  Grant- African American  Mehserle assumed he was armed.  Mehserle detained and arrested him even though many people were involved.  Oakland-lots of crime  28% of Oakland is African American  History of Crack Cocaine  More poverty among African Americans

Discrimination will always exist because  There will always be poor people  Poor people need money  People discriminate against poor people  Poor areas get more police doing discriminatory things  People always want to feel like they are better than other people  People are scared of things/people they don’t understand

Discrimination will end when…  Never?  There are no poor people  No poverty=no crime  People are not scared of others who are different  US becomes a community that wants to help each other

Thank you!  Thanks for being my audience.  Movie- Fruitvale Station.  om/watch?v=ufBtJs9lEj o om/watch?v=ufBtJs9lEj o  Rest in Paradise, Oscar Grant
